Eichyd da, Eichyd da, Eichyd da!
A proud tradition and saying from the Sebastopol Lodge No. 63 which is derived from the Welsh language which expresses good wishes and good health before drinking.

VWBro. Reverend Israel Morris Goldreich, known as Harav Ezriel Meir in Hebrew, was born in 1834 in Kudzberg, Poland.
He served as the Rabbi of the Ballarat Synagogue for an impressive 37 years from 1868 until his death in 1905.

In 1869, he married Priscilla Levy on the 13 January (5629 in the Hebrew calendar).

The couple had eight children. Tragically, Priscilla Goldreich passed away on the eve of Tammuz 5643 (3 July 1883) due to childbirth complications with their 8th child at the age of 40.

In the realm of Freemasonry, VWBro. Reverend Israel Morris Goldreich had a rich history. He was initiated into King Solomon's Lodge No. 422 (I.C.) No. 29 (V.C.) in Melbourne on 26 August 1862, passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft on 9 September 1862, and became a Master Mason on the 14 October 1862.

His Masonic journey continued as he joined Tasmanian Union No.536 (E.C.) in Hobart (14/5/1864), Yarrowee Lodge No. 713 (E.C.) in Ballarat (3/11/1868), Buninyong Lodge No. 413 (I.C.) on the 21 March 1877, drawing a Clearance on the 13 March 1878.

He also became a member of Sebastopol Lodge No. 452 (I.C.) on the 7 December 1877, earning the esteemed rank of Very Worshipful Brother, Past Grand Lodge Chaplain from the United Grand Lodge of Victoria in March 1890.

VWBro. Reverend Israel Morris Goldreich held various positions at Sebastopol Lodge No. 452 (I.C.) and No. 63 (V.C.), including serving as Master in 1877, Immediate Past Master in 1878, 1879, and 1881, and spending 23 years as the Lodge Chaplain from 1882 to 1905.
In 1886 VWBro. Reverend Goldreich was offered life membership free of dues but he refused to accept this.

Some interesting facts about his Masonic journey include being nominated for Grand Junior Deacon in 1878, nominated as Grand Chaplain in 1880, and petitioning the lodge in 1882 to make a donation of £5 to aid distressed Jews in Russia.

In 1889, he was one of six brethren chosen from Sebastopol Lodge to attend the United Grand Lodge of Victoria, transferring their allegiance from the Grand Lodge of Ireland to the United Grand Lodge of Victoria and voting on the new Grand Master for Victoria.
In 1903 VWBro. Reverend Goldreich was made an Honorary member of the Sebastopol Lodge.

VWBro. Reverend Israel Morris Goldreich passed away on Sivan 24th 5665 (27 June 1905) in Ballarat. In a mark of respect, the United Grand Lodge of Victoria granted dispensation for members to wear full Masonic regalia from the entrance to the Ballarat New Cemetery Gate to his Grave. 19 brethren and 21 visitors attended to confer Masonic Honours upon our deceased brother.

United Grand Lodge of Victoria is celebrating its 135 year anniversary today!

21 March 2024 marks the 135 year anniversary of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria, it's worth taking a moment to reflect on the journey that has brought us to this significant milestone. Our history is rich with events and achievements, each contributing to the legacy of our United Grand Lodge.

In reflecting on our history, that inaugural Grand Installation held at the Town Hall in 1889, where MWBro. Sir William Clarke was installed, heralded a new era for Freemasonry in Victoria. Since then, we've witnessed growth and impact within our community. Over 900 Lodges consecrated, millions of dollars donated to charitable causes through our former Board of Benevolence, and the establishment of institutions like our two hospitals and the Freemasons Foundation all serving the Victorian community with care and compassion.

Through our Masonic Taskforce, countless hours of volunteerism have been dedicated to supporting those in need, being in the moment through tough times of fire, floods and the aftermath, but also making an impact on days like the Royal Children Hospital Good Friday appeal, together embodying the very essence of our Masonic principles.

As we mark this anniversary of 135 years, let us also reaffirm our commitment to supporting each other and our Lodges and upholding the tenets and principles of Freemasonry. Together, let us continue to strive for excellence and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
