Always remember to do your part, and if in doubt, ask. https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2023/11/18/default-calendar/world-amr-awareness-week-2023#:~:text=WAAW%20is%20celebrated%20from%2018,It%20affects%20us%20all.

Today, Monday 13th of November, is World Kindness Day. As nurses we often show kindness throughout our work however after Covid-19, the socioeconomical, and cultural stressors we can often feel burnt out, tired and unwilling to do the simple acts of kindness - especially for ourselves. Take time today to consider 7 Acts of Kindness that can help change the World: ❤️ Send an uplifting text to a friend or family member. 🧡 Let that guy merge into traffic with a wave and a smile. Include intentional moments of kindness, laughter and delight in your daily routine. 💛 Go slightly outside of your comfort zone at least once a day to make someone smile. 💚 Share a compliment with a co-worker or friend. 🩵 Reach out to a family member you haven't spoken to in awhile. 💙 Treat someone to a cup of coffee (a friend, stranger, or even yourself). 💜 Smile at those around you.

Welcome to ICEN 2023 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. We had an amazing first day with a warm welcome from the Whadjuk Nyoongar people. It was great to see Margaret Fry’s review of 20 years of ED nursing, the progression and the challenges faced, alongside seeing multiple speakers presenting their various topics and our sponsors representing and ensuring ICEN 2023 went ahead. Here’s to seeing you all tomorrow, especially those who will be at the 0700 sponsored breakfast by the Medical Developments International (https://medicaldev.com) for the “Case Presentations: Why methoxyflurane is helpful as an analgesic to manage acute pain in the Emergency Department”. If you’re not there we will see you at 0820 for a full day of great speakers (check out the program on your event app or here: https://assocprof.eventsair.com/QuickEventWebsitePortal/icen/icen-2023-conference-program/Agenda). #ICEN2023 #emergencynurse #perth #emergencymedicine #medicaldevelopmentsinternational

R U OK Day Working in ED we wear our scrubs, save lives and go through the motions. We can forget to check in, today, any day, to see how each other is doing - not just on the surface but under all the layers we can wear. Never stop checking in on each other and prioritising selfcare. Help your ED nurses out, what selfcare do you do? Stuck on how to ask someone if they're okay? Check out R U OK's website: https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

September 1st - 7th is Australia's National Asthma Week. As emergency nurses we may know how to treat asthma attacks. We may also realise that pre-hospitalisation treatment has different methods to ED management. However, how is your holistic care of the patient sufferring with an asthma attack? Do your patients receive holistic care? Not just for the prehospitalisation, and emergency presentation but with discharge planning? Consider how you can effectively help your patients with quality resources from Asthma Australia: https://asthma.org.au/what-we-do/how-we-can-help/resources/

Every minute 12 children are diagnosed with an often incurable genetic disorder or birth defect. As ED nurses we see these individuals and the impact it has on them and their family's lives. Today marks 30 years of wearing jeans on the 4th of August to help fundraise for a cure. What can you do today to help make a difference? It's DonateLife Week (23rd to 30th of July, 2023). Did you know that in Australia there are around 1,750 people awaiting life saving organs with 1,300 people on dialysis who may require an organ transplant in the future. Last year only 454 people were able to donate their organs to 1,224 transplant recipients. Did you know that eye and tissue donation can occur 24 hours after someone has died. This is the common organ donation for people who died at home and in ED, unless ventilation is in situ. Have you checked if your ED (or ICU) can cater for people who register for organ donations? You may be surprised. Donation staff specialists are all around Australia and technology advancements have increased the lifespan of the donated organ outside of the donor's body. Did you know that Australia is an opt-in organ registration system and requires individuals to inform their loved ones of their wishes to donate organs. Whilst the organ donor may have registered, DonateLife's website implies that if the donor has not informed their family of the wishes, 4/10 will decline the opportunity when the donation staff specialists confer with the family. In the cases where the donor has discussed with their family, 8/10 will proceed with the donor's wishes. Where are you at with your journey of organ donation? Have you decided if you will donate? Have you talked to your family? How will DonateLife Week impact your nursing? It only takes one person, one minute, to be on the register to help seven people awaiting life saving treatment. If you're wanting to donate your organs, and you can choose what organs you want to donate, check out this link: https://www.donatelife.gov.au/register-donor-today Other resources can be found here: The organ donation process in Australia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79KdJJLePCU DonateLife Australian statistics: https://www.donatelife.gov.au/all-about-donation/statistics-in-australia Common Myths: https://www.donatelife.gov.au/all-about
