Vipoo Srivilasa - ART
A Thai born Australian artist, Vipoo Srivilasa
Holcombe from Artist Profile magazine spoke with Vipoo Srivilasa about his upcoming exhibition at Olsen Gallery over beloved Zoom.
The technology strongly embraced during the pandemic is not the only hangover of these past few years, but as Srivilasa playfully explores in this exhibition, so is the lingering sense of loneliness.

OPEN STUDIO
I am inviting you all to ClayLAB Open day. ClayLAB (my studio) has not been open to the public for a long time. I am very excited to be able to welcome you all.
There will be a number of ceramic works from my travels available. I am raising funds to support flood victims in QLD and NSW via Givit.
Plus huge deals on tools, books, raw materials, cat toys and cat food (yes, my cats are so fussy with food). I will have my brooches and animal sculptures ready for the open day too.
Sun 26 June
10 am - 5pm
13/158 Chesterville Road
Cheltenham VIC 3192
NOTE: My studio is part of a warehouse complex. It is right at the end of the driveway, behind the main building. Best to park in the main car park at the front.
The street number 158 is a bit hard to see. People often go past it and end up at No 150 which is an office complex. Don't panic, 150 is next to 158. You can park there and walk to 158. It takes like 2 mins to walk.
Dont miss it!
10 days to go.
If you still hesitate to join The Ceramics Congress, here is a preview of some of the workshop you will see at the congress.
The event is all online.
The workshops run 72 hours back to back so no matter where you are in the world, there will be some exiting demo on.
Ticket starts at $USD 29 (for the 5 days event!!)

A Happy Australian project Call Out
What does a happy Australian look like?
Vipoo Srivilasa is inviting you to submit a drawing of your most Australian Eleganza Extravaganza outfit to wear on the happiest occasion of your life.
“I would like to capture a portrait of a happy Australian through fashion. One thing that makes me (and many others) happy is clothes. What we wear can create our identity. The clothes we put on affect our mood and wearing your best outfit sure creates happiness.” - Vipoo Srivilasa .
The 10 most inspiring outfits will be chosen as an inspiration for 10 ceramic sculptures. A ceramic badge, certifying that you are a happy Australian and an artist fee of $200 (inc GST) will be offered each shortlisted.
Every Australian and Australian permanent residents is invited to digitally submit their design. No matter where you live in the world.
INSTRUCTIONS
1: On A4 size paper, design and colour your most Australian Eleganza Extravaganza outfit to wear on the happiest occasion of your life.
2: The outfit design must be shown from head to toe.
3: Make your outfit unique and stand out by incorporating your personal story to the design. Create accessories like hats, necklaces, shoes, glasses, gloves, ties or bandanas that link to your story. No limits to creativity. The outfit doesn’t have to be realistic! Go crazy with ideas and imagination. The more creative the better!
4: Write about your outfit, explain your design and share the stories behind the outfit. Don't forget to tell us what is the occasion you would wear this outfit for (250 words maximum)
3: Include your name, location, and Instagram handle (if you have one)
4: Keep your original drawing, if your design is selected, we may need it for an exhibition. Just use a snapshot of your design for the entry.
5: Entry should be submitted to [email protected] by midnight Monday 21 Feb 2022, Melbourne time.
The result will be posted on Vipoo’s Instagram ().
A volcano beneath the sea off the coast of Tonga has erupted - sending tsunami waves large enough to cause devastation across the nation’s largest island. The full extent of the blast's impact remains unknown, but disaster relief campaigns have been set up in the wake of the eruption.
In a similar format to Clay For Nepal and Clay For Australia, Clay For Tonga is an online fundraising project for clay workers to come together and offer support to the people of Tonga.
It’s simple and anyone can take part. Here’s how:
1. Clay For Tonga starts on Mon 24 Jan and finishes on Sun 30 Jan (Australia time).
2. Post images of the ceramic work you wish to sell on your IG 🙂
3. Give details of size, materials, price and where you are based. Be sure to note that postage is extra.
4. Add “this work is part of " to your post. This allows me to easily share your post.
5. Make a sale and donate to any charity aimed at helping Tonga Emergency Appeal.
My suggestion is Care Australia (www.care.org.au/appeals/tonga-emergency/) CARE Australia has long standing relationships with local partners in Tonga who are ready to respond. However, Oxfam, Red Cross or a smaller organisation that supports Tonga appeal are good too.
6. DM the amount of your donation to IG to add to the total number.
7: Be sure to include and follow and ⠀(https://www.instagram.com/clayfortonga/)
8. Share this far and wide.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hope you can join Clay For Tonga.
Vipoo 🙂
I am sooo excited.
The Ceramics Congress is only 5 days to go!
Hope to see you there.

The Ceramics Congress is coming soon (27 - 31 May)!
As an artistic Director, I work with the team to sort out an ever growing list of potential artists from around the world to create the final invite list. Much time and consideration goes into that final list so that we can present within the 5-day long event as much diversity as possible. We have artists from Ukraine, Mexico, Peru, UK, Malaysia, Argentina, Singapore, Japan, USA, Belgium, Nigeria, Latvia, India, Egypt, Taiwan, Poland, Scotland, Thailand, Canada and Turkey.
Diversity is incredibly important to us, diversity in terms of cultural background and race, as well as gender, educational background and experience in the field. The group of 6 of us that are organising the event are from Austria, Canada, USA, Australia and Thailand, so 4 different cultural heritage backgrounds - working across 5 different time zones. Three women, three males, 50% BIPOC and also representative of the LGTBQ2AI community.
Accessibility is also very important to us so keeping the cost of attending the event low is key. Joshua Collinson from Ceramic School, the founder, has put a lot of the profit from past events into the large expense of closed captioning of videos, and is looking into having the next event’s videos have closed captioning in three different languages to make the event easier for international artists to attend and get the most out of the event.
This edition will be focusing on Canada with the fabulous Carole Epp from Musing About Mud curating the Canadian workshops and events; including a major Canadian ceramic online exhibition.
Fabiola De la Cueva is organising artist lead challenges.
Tim See is putting together a list of artists for practical advice sessions
Numpucsh Semachai has coordinated the congress’s Virtual Makers Market.
As well as the nonstop 72 hours long workshops so no matter where you are in the world, there always be something exciting happening at the congress.
I am looking forward to sharing with you the congress artists in the weeks to come. If you can’t wait, the congress, here is a link

Here are some colourful characters to brighten up your Sunday. Vipoo Srivilasa’s work is always a delight and guaranteed to summon up a smile. Even when tackling serious subjects, his figures are curious, quirky and playful.
There’s a serious dimension to his work, which combines European aesthetic with Asian decorative practices, but hey, they’re also a lot of fun.
‘COVID Superheroes’, an exhibition of porcelain figures created from drawings submitted by the Ballarat community of their dreams and fears during the pandemic, opens on 13 February.

It is a great honor and humble to be awarded The 2021 Ceramic Artist of the Year by the editorial staff of Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated magazine (USA).
I am earnestly grateful for the recognition I have received for my work. Especially from the international organisation that has been inspiring me since my time in University.
The annual Ceramic Artist of the Year award is presented to an artist whose work reflects current aesthetics and sets an example for ceramic artists by embracing current trends, technology, studio, marketing, and/or community-focused practices.
“Over the course of your career, you’ve been very active with exhibitions, winning numerous awards, public art projects, teaching, mentoring, and community outreach. In addition, you have helped to support and engage with the global clay community through innovative social media fundraising campaigns, among other projects.
The fact that you can consistently create work as a self-employed artist in addition to having a busy schedule is impressive. In short due to all of your personal creative achievements, as well as your dedication to the field, we feel that you are more than deserving of the Ceramic Artist of the Year award.”

As a Thai-born Australian artist, a cross-cultural experience is in my blood and it is my passion to share this experience with others. Cultural diversity helps me understand the conflicts and contradictions in race, religious and sexual discrimination from personal, regional and global points of view. It is the reason why I am actively involved in organised cultural exchange projects between artists internationally.
I am so thrilled to partner with Joshua Collinson from The Ceramic School and Dr. Wendy Gers, leading international curator, to launch a registered charity: Ceramics for Charity.
Ceramics. For Charity is a brand new fundraising platform launching on 1st August 2020. It seamlessly combines technology, art and community. The digital platform allows us to organise a cultural exchange project and reach out to distant communities in a way I have never previously can.
