Ever wonder what your skin is trying to tell you?

We are here to help you decode those messages and help you achieve your skin goals with science-backed treatments and a touch of self-care.

1. Breakouts on the skin can be a sign of internal imbalances including hormonal fluctuations, stress, or may be exacerbated by gut and dietary factors. As a multifaceted condition getting to the root cause/s of acne is important as well as and seeking professional assistance when skin care alone isn’t helping.

2. Dry, flaky skin may indicate dehydration or lack of essential nutrients in your diet. Balancing your diet, getting enough fluid intake and incorporating hydrating and occlusive skincare products can help restore moisture to your skin and improve your overall health.

3. Skin redness or sensitivity can be a result of inflammation, allergies, or sensitivity to certain ingredients in skincare products. By identifying triggers and using gentle, soothing skincare products, you can calm and nourish your skin while promoting better overall health.

4. Dark circles and puffiness around the eyes can be a sign of lack of sleep, stress, or poor circulation as well as genetic predisposition. Taking steps to prioritise rest, manage stress, and incorporate targeted eye treatments can help reduce these visible signs and improve your overall well-being.

5. Fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity in the skin can be accelerated by factors such as sun exposure, smoking and of course time. There are periods in our life when ageing seems to speed up, for women perimenopause is one of those times we feel big changes in our skin. Recent studies say that rather than the slow progression we imagine the body experiences a change particularly around 40 and another at 65 ish. By protecting your skin from UV damage, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and using skincare you can support your skin's health.

Let's listen to what your skin is saying and book your tailored skincare journey with us today.

1. Weird autocorrect
2. Siri or Alexa misheard me
3. My fingers are too fat for the buttons on my phone
4. I thought I was booking the Vet appointment - whoops
6. I can't text and walk at the same time... strange things happen

Happy friday Beauties... you don't need an excuse to come and see us but we don't mind being your time out haven!

We explain why skin treatments are so much more than what you think!

1. We don't just treat skin on the face. Skin concerns and problems are not limited to just the face; we can tailor personalised advice and plans to assist with skin anywhere on the body. However, as our face is one of our most sun-exposed and the part that the world sees most it is often the area that people will seek assistance for. But don't be afraid to ask about all those other areas you may not have asked about.

If we can't help you then we can assist you in getting the help you need, from the right health professional at the right time.

2. Skin health is impacted by and impacts every other system of the body so a skin treatment is also a mind/body connection. A relaxing "facial" shouldn't be seen as just a facial or just a skin treatment. It is a service that works on your nervous system, your circulatory system, and even your mood. Its a social connection, it allows you to to step out of the daily rush and feel what it is to be in your body, to check in with yourself. It can be a mindfulness practice..and much easier in our opinion than trying to make your mind empty of all thoughts. Its 30-60 minutes to concentrate on all the feelings, the water on your skin, the tingling sensation of your exfoliant the creamy mask, and the tension melting from your muscles during the massage.

3. Clinical treatments look like facials but are corrective skin treatments. These treatments can be relaxing but they usually have a goal to assist in improving or supporting a skin function to assist with achieving healthier skin. In between clinical skin treatments, you would maintain the positive changes with other strategies to protect and nuture the skin for long term skin health.

Aren't we all looking for that miracle cream that can wipe away years of sleep deprivation and stress due to balancing work, family, friends and social connections...

We all know the answer is to take better care of ourselves but even more difficult to make ourselves a priority sometimes.... but it's easier said than done, we know. We hear you!

Prioritising your skin health as a goal is to keep the skin working optimally over a lifetime, We are here to support you with short-term changes but are also looking at the long game with you.

The skin health pyramid is our Pro tip for achieving healthy skin over a lifetime. It's the small things that add up to big things over time.

Our base - (Every day)... carve out a little time for a basic skincare routine tailored to your needs. Listen to your skin and seek some professional advice when things aren't feeling right with your skin.

If all you can manage is the bare minimum, a gentle cleanser, moisturiser to protect the skin barrier, sunscreen and other sun protective behaviours such as hats, glasses and shade every day will go a very very long way. If you can manage it an antioxidant skin product on sun-exposed areas will assist over time to reduce oxidative stress that can cause us to look tired due to cellular damage.

Have more time and more budget? Do what feels right and feels good. You can insert weekly exfoliation, hydrating or treatment skin care products.

Just like having a doctors check-up, a dentists visit or a gym membership, professional skin treatments can prevent future problems, keep the skin working optimally, manage sun damage, and correct skin issues early.

In our pyramid are some of the therapies that are supported by evidence playing a role in long-term skin health when performed on a semi-regular basis.

What one thing will you start today so that future you will thank you when they start to look a bit fresher and more radiant?

Did you know that antioxidants and sunscreen are like the dynamic duo when it comes to protecting your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays?

Antioxidants like Vitamin C and E are molecules that can neutralize harmful free radicals produced by UV radiation. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress and damage to skin cells, leading to premature ageing and skin cancer. Antioxidants help to counteract these effects by scavenging free radicals and reducing their damaging impact on the skin.

Sunscreen, on the other hand, contains active ingredients that either absorb or reflect UV radiation, preventing it from penetrating the skin cells and causing damage. Sunscreens with a high sun protection factor (SPF) provide greater protection against both UVA and UVB rays, which are known to cause sunburn, wrinkles, as well as contribute to skin cancer development.

When used together, antioxidants and sunscreen create a synergistic effect that enhances the overall protection of your skin against sun damage. Antioxidants can help to repair and prevent damage caused by free radicals, while sunscreen acts as a physical barrier to block out harmful UV radiation.

We love to incorporate both antioxidants and sunscreen into your daily skincare routine to keep your skin healthy, radiant, and protected from the sun's harmful effects.

It’s as easy as
Step 1 Cleanse
Step 2 Antioxidant serum
Step 3 High Protection Sunscreen

In the morning for healthy skin every day check out our ranges in our online store or in clinic, or chat to Louise, Vera, Dani or Sandra about which products would be right for you!

Is the spf in your sunscreen enough to prevent skin cancer?

SPF in your makeup is a great start, used alone its not enough to protect your skin from Australia’s intense UV rays. Here’s why you need a dedicated sunscreen in your skincare routine:

1. Insufficient Coverage
Most people don’t apply enough makeup to achieve the SPF level required for UV radiation protection. Did anyone say pancake face?

2. Frequent Reapplication
Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every 2 hours, especially if you’re outdoors.

3. Broad-Spectrum Protection
Most make up alone does not provide broad-spectrum protection, which is crucial to guard against both Australias high UV index and its UVA and UVB rays. This increases the risk of sun burn, premature ageing and skin cancer development.

Evidence-Based Recommendations:
🔹 Daily Sunscreen Application: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning, regardless of the weather. Ensure you use about a teaspoon for your face and neck.
🔹 Layer with Makeup: There is emerging evidence that supports using make up as the pigment in it helps to protect against visible light that can exacerbate some skin conditions like melasma.
🔹 Reapply Regularly: Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors, and immediately after swimming or sweating.

Professional Tip:
For those worried about reapplying sunscreen over makeup, consider using tinted sunscreen instead of foundation, or a powder sunscreen or mist to re-apply. These are convenient options to top up your protection throughout the day without disrupting your makeup. Sprays are not a good option for your base sunscreen application so if you are planning a day of sunexposure skip the make up and use a broad spectrum spf30+ instead as well as other sun protective measures such as hats, sunnies, clothing and shade.

Protect Your Skin:
At Beauty by the Bay Skin and Laser, we emphasise the importance of comprehensive sun protection as part of your skincare routine. Need advice on the best sunscreens for your skin type? Book a consultation with us today!

Do you have questions about treating pigmentation?

Pigmentation is a natural and common skin characteristic that many of us experience. Whether it’s freckles, age spots, or sunspots, pigmentation can add unique beauty to our skin.

But understanding its causes and knowing when to seek professional help is key to maintaining healthy, skin. 💖

Common Causes of Pigmentation:

Hormonal Changes: Conditions like melasma are often linked to hormonal changes during pregnancy or from birth control.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): After an injury or inflammation, like acne, the skin can darken as it heals.
Genetics: Some people are naturally predisposed to certain types of pigmentation, like freckles.
Sun Damage and ageing: Over time, skin may develop pigmentation due to prolonged sun exposure and the natural aging process.

When to Seek Professional Help:
✨ Sudden Changes: If you notice new, rapidly developing pigmentation or changes in existing spots (like size, color, or shape), it’s important to get it checked out by a medical professional.
✨ Persistent Pigmentation: If over-the-counter treatments aren’t effective, a professional can offer targeted therapies like laser therapy, chemical peels, or in some cases a dermatologist can provide prescription-strength topicals.
✨ Pigmentation with Symptoms: If pigmentation is accompanied by symptoms like itching, bleeding, or pain, seek medical advice immediately.

Embrace Your Skin:
Remember, your skin is a part of who you are, and pigmentation can be natural and beautiful. Embracing your skin while staying mindful of changes is the best way to love and care for it. If you’re ever unsure, our team at Beauty by the Bay Skin and Laser is here to help. We offer consultations to assess your skin’s needs and recommend the best treatments to keep it healthy and radiant and will let you know if its something that you need to get medical expert eyes on.

Love the skin you’re in, and let us help you on your lifelong skin health journey! 🌟

In Melbourne we’ve had a sneak peak this weekend that winter is thawing and we are coming into spring! It always feels good to feel the sunlight on our bodies, see the plants wake up and we start to feel like getting out and about again. It’s good for the endorphins,

But did you know that in Australia our UV index is quite high all year round so a little sunlight goes a long way. With the statistics being that two out of three of us receiving a skin cancer diagnosis by the time we are 70 it’s important to make sunscreen a part of our every day skin health routine on sun exposed areas. Not just beach days! As it’s the cumulative effects of sun damage that contribute to these statistics as well.

Most skin cancers are preventable so let’s live, love, laugh and enjoy the sun by slipping on sun protective clothing, slop on sunscreen on sun exposed areas, slap on a hat when going outside, and of course sliding on sunnies to protect those beautiful eyes.

💥💥Flash Warning (Video)💥💥

Are you experiencing changes in your skin due to perimenopause? You're not alone! As hormone levels fluctuate, it's common to notice changes in hair growth, redness, as well as a loss of hydration and skin elasticity. In this sneak peek at Beauty by the Bay we are using the Lutronic Clarity II to rejuvenate and revitalize this client's complexion! 💫

Here's how it works:
1️⃣ Hair Removal: Using advanced laser technology we safely and effectively reduce or re**rd unwanted hair growth. For permanent hair reduction, the ideal client has dark hair and light skin. For this particular client as they have very blond/red hair we are using laser for a hair "stunting" treatment only. This is being used as an alternative to waxing the area but we will also need to incorporate electrolysis for more permanent removal of light or thicker individual hairs.
2️⃣ Redness Reduction: Laser can be used to target blood vessels responsible for redness, resulting in a more even-toned complexion. The toning treatment feels comfortable with a warming of the skin, that leave the skin looking like you have been for a good run which settles over the next 24-48 hours.
3️⃣ General Rejuvenation: By stimulating collagen production and promoting skin renewal, laser can help to restore firmness and elasticity to perimenopausal skin over time and with several treatments.

But remember—it's important to consult with a skincare professional to determine if it's the right treatment for you. Every individual's skin is unique, and personalized care is key to achieving optimal outcomes. If you have medical conditions that impacts on hair growth your dermal clinician can discuss options with you and work collaboratively with medical professionals as required.

Do you have dilated blood vessels and not sure what you can do about them?

If you have dilated blood vessels AKA telangiectasia on the face or body laser therapy is a clinical treatment option to address this condition.

Telangiectasia are commonly known as 'broken capillaries', however they are not really broken, rather they are small, dilated and visible blood vessels that appear near the surface of the skin, often on the face.

They can be caused by various factors, including genetics, sun exposure, aging, skin trauma or as a symptom of Rosacea.

Laser therapy is a targeted treatment with light energy being absorbed by the blood vessels, causing them to coagulate and eventually be reabsorbed by the body.

There is minimal downtime, you can expect the vessels to either darken initially or to blanch and disappear with some surrounding skin redness. This can depend on the size (thickness) of the dilated blood vessels.

This patient had three treatments over 12 weeks to achieve this result with our Lutronic Clarity II Laser.
(ARTG ID 426430 & ARTG ID 448986)

During your initial consultation, our skilled clinicians will assess your skin and case history to determine if therapy is appropriate or the right treatment for your situation.

Depending on the severity of your condition, multiple sessions will often be required for optimal results and co management with a medical professional may be required.

It’s important to follow post-treatment care instructions, which may include avoiding sun exposure and using gentle skincare products.

Book your consultation to learn more about whether this is a suitable treatment for you.

Do you experience skin redness or flushing? You’re not alone, and we’re here to help!

Red skin is usually a sign of either increased blood flow and/or inflammation. Whether this is a problem or not for you can depend on how long, severe and how often you experience it, as well as other ways it makes your skin or you more generally feel.

Common Causes of Skin Redness:
🔹 Genetic predisposition - our skin colour and thickness, responses to touch, stress and anxiety, and exercise can all cause our skin to 'flush'
🔹 Rosacea: A chronic condition causing facial redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps.
🔹 Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis): A condition leading to red, itchy, and inflamed skin.
🔹 Psoriasis: An autoimmune disease that causes red, scaly patches on the skin.
🔹 Allergic Reactions: Can result from contact with irritants or allergens, leading to red, itchy rashes.
🔹 Sunburn: Excessive sun exposure causes red, painful skin.
🔹 Acne: Inflammation and redness as well as blackheads and sometimes red and sore pustules or cysts.

Self-Management Tips:
✨ Gentle Skincare: Use mild products to avoid further irritation.
✨ Skin barrier: Keep your skin moisturised to maintain its barrier function.
✨ Sun Protection: Always wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn and UV-induced redness.
✨ Avoid Triggers: Identify and steer clear of personal triggers, such as certain foods, environmental factors, or stress.

When to Seek Professional Assistance:
🔍 Persistent Redness: If redness doesn’t improve with at-home care, it’s time to consult a professional.
🔍 Severe Symptoms: Intense pain, swelling, or sudden changes in your skin’s condition, impacting sleep all warrant professional attention.
🔍 Chronic Conditions: Conditions like rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis often require specialised treatments.

At Beauty by the Bay, we offer evidence-based treatments tailored to your skin’s unique needs. We also work with other health professionals when you have a skin condition that requires medical support.
