Wear A Life Jacket
Whether you are kayaking, kite surfing, sailing, boating, fishing....YOU ALL NEED A LIFEJACKET. ๐ฆบ
Water safety is our vibe so here's a few lifejacket tips:
๐ก Store your lifejacket in a safe place so you don't have any tears or cuts in the fabric. If it's damaged, don't use it and replace it.
โ To be considered to be 'wearing' a lifejacket, you must have it fastened and secured.
Oh, and EVERYONE needs a lifejacket! For more information, check the comments ๐

50 years of the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter
Just last week, we proudly celebrated 50 years of partnership between Westpac and the national Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service, which first took flight in Sydney in 1973.
Here in Victoria, the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service was established in 1977. Even just in the last 15 years our amazing team of fifteen volunteer crew members have responded to more than 500 missions and flown over 3000 hours.
As Westpac teams across the nation show their support by wearing their best summer outfits and hosting Rescue Helicopter Month, here is a message from our very own crew member Sas McNamara alongside Westpacโs State General Manager for Victoria, Anna Mcliesh.
Victorian IRB 2023 state teams confirmed!

Awards of Excellence; Port Melbourne LSC share their story
Last year, we congratulated Port Melbourne LSC for prioritising community safety, inclusivity, and member engagement as winners of the Beaurepaire Sheild Club of the Year award at our Awards of Excellence. Last season, they installed a new defib and increased patrol services, including proactive coordination with other clubs and social media updates.
Their commitment to water safety education is evident through their school program and participation in local events. They've expanded their Starfish Nipper program and continue to offer a safe and accessible environment for all, including hosting events showcasing women in lifesaving.
Despite the pandemic, they've sustained membership growth and upskilled their members. Well done!

Australia has many beautiful inland waterways including rivers, creeks, lakes and dams; however, they can pose safety risks, and these vary depending on the type of waterway. We are saddened to share that new Royal Life Saving Society - Australia research found that between 2011/12 to 2020/21, 924 people drowned in rivers, creeks, lakes, and dams. Whether youโre swimming, boating, or even just relaxing on the bank, there are many hidden dangers that you may not be aware of. Stay safe: โ Check conditions before entering the water โ Take care when walking on unstable or slippery riverbeds โ Avoid alcohol and drugs around water โ Wear a lifejacket when boating or using watercraft โ Always swim with a mate More: https://bit.ly/3kgbEKt

Today - Paddle boarder rescue
Do you wake up with TODAY? ๐บ This week, Australians were shocked to hear about four paddleboarders who ended up more than 20kms away from where they started, after being blown off course and spending a night at sea.
As Sean, our deputy chief lifeguard of the Mornington Peninsula and a member at both Sorrento SLSC (VIC) and Portsea Surf Life Saving Clubs explains, it's shocking but not surprising when you consider the power of the elements and how quickly things can get out of hand.
If you're heading out, remember to always:
๐ด swim at a patrolled beach, check beachsafe.org.au for patrol times
๐ก check weather forecast
๐ด wear a lifejacket
๐ก never go out alone
๐ด know your limits
๐ก let someone know where you're going and when they can expect you back

Victorian 2021-22 Drowning Report
Nathan Hardinge knows the importance of wearing a lifejacket better than most, after he, his nephew, and his young son were thrown into the water in Western Port Bay when their boat capsized.
Stranded in open water for more than an hour, the trio managed to stay afloat thanks to their lifejackets, which gave them time to raise the alarm for help by deploying an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) and lighting a flare.
Nathan and his family are the lucky few, with our annual drowning report, released today, revealing four in five boating or fishing-related drowning deaths during the past decade involving incorrect or no lifejacket use.

Today is the first day of summer and marks National Water Safety Day.
With the effects of La Nina and ongoing flooding events, Australiaโs peak water safety authorities, Royal Life Saving Society - Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia are urging Australians to make water safety awareness a priority.

๐ Swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags
โ
Check the weather conditions before heading out
๐ฆบ Wear a lifejacket if you are going boating, rock fishing, or on watercraft
โ Avoid alcohol and drugs while undertaking water activities
๐โโ๏ธ Always supervise children in, on and around water at all times
