Switching to electric?

Recently, we’ve been fielding a number of inquiries from people winch, wishing to change cooktops from gas to electric the primary concern being that gas supply is being phased out. This is absolutely categorically true with one notable exception.

Australia still has vast supplies of gas, which is being sold Nationally and internationally. It is still a major source of energy for both commercial and domestic uses. This switch will be generational. You and I will not see it in our lifetime. As an example, one gas supplier just announced they are building a $200 million facility to store more gas in Australia for local use. There are existing contracts to supply gas into 2040, with the resources are available well beyond that date.

There is absolutely no need to switch from gas to electric because the state government government said you should. The exception is of course any legislative changes they may make for example new builds. This will not affect existing gas use.

The girls got together!
This always ends badly for us guys. The ultimatum is that we shut down the business for a week
from 23/12 - 2/1
Yes, we know that includes Christmas and New Year’s.
The girls however are not unreasonable and have said if something desperately important comes up, we may be able to procure a pass. But, the cost to us is a pair of shoes.
“What kind of shoes” you may ask.
The answer is… “if you need to ask, you can’t afford them.”

Should it occur that someone needs assistance, we’re simply passing on this increased cost of trade.
We can help, but it will be unashamedly exorbitantly expensive.
Again, I stress this is because the girls made us do it.

18/12/2023

We are now well inside the silly season. With the impending doom of Christmas approaching, we appreciate everyone’s desire to have their appliances attended to with the utmost urgency.
Unfortunately, we are limited to the same constraints of time and space that you are.

If you need to contact someone else, assuming they are not prohibitively busy, we completely understand.

We too, are taking this for a time for a break. We have limited capacity for new jobs.

Be assured, if you have made a booking we have seen your plea for assistance and we are doing the best we can whilst also taking some time for ourselves, and, our families.

It may just take much longer than our usual 24-48 hours turn around.

We appreciate your patience and wish you a happy Xmas and terrific year ahead.

Most washing machines have a drain cap that is removable to get out that little piece of lego. Sometimes however, that cap gets stuck on something and you cant get ot out. It can become much more drastic as in the instance below. This meant removing the front panel to access the drain pump so as to remove the obstructions.

Detergents & your Laundry.

You know how when you hand wash your dishes, and there’s not enough bubbles (suds) you add in more detergent. That’s because just like brushing your teeth, the detergent acts as a medium to hold the dirt rather than just moving it around the plate, or teeth as the case may be.

But manual washing is vastly different to machine washing.

There a 5 factors that are necessary to wash dishes or indeed clothes.
*Detergent
*Time
*Mechanical action
*Temperature
*Water

If any one of those factors are sacrificed, they must be made up somewhere in the others.

Detergents are there to break down fats & proteins. They often have color enhancers, bleaches, scents and water softeners. They tend to work better in warmer 30-50 deg temperatures (yes, that includes Cold Power) and they should not cause suds.

Suds in a washing machine are bad. They can cause leaks, poor spinning, greying of clothes and can corrode the metal parts of the washing machine. They are an alkaline as opposed to an acid.

If you have suds in your washer, the problem is NOT your washing machine. It simply can’t be. You have either too much detergent, not enough clothes or are using a poor quality detergent.

Detergent is NOT like red wine. You don’t get double the benefit for double the dose.

Manufacturers of dishwashers or washers don’t care which detergent you use. No one brand is better in one machine over another.

Most manufacturers tend to recommend powder detergents. There’s no real reason, except that the various chemicals tend not to combine in an aesthetically pleasing way as a liquid and are more expensive to manufacture.

Whichever detergent you use, if you’re like most people, you’re probably using too much.

So use less detergent and drink more red wine.

Refrigeration has been around for some 150 years. It’s not at all a new technology. The principals are fundamentally the same but the gasses used have changed over time.

Of course, there are a plethora of fridges around.

The mechanism that keeps things cold is generally very robust and we don’t see many problems. Faults tend to be associated with the peripheral faculties like ice makers, big screens and the “door in door” type mechanisms. This is also why brands like Leibherr & Miele for example don’t focus a lot of their range on these things.

The Asian built product range certainly does add these features to sway your purchase to their favour.

But you’re wise to question what you really want from your fridge.

Do you need a screen or is the abundance of iPads and laptops sufficient?

Do you need a water dispenser or is the tap that you grew up with ok?

If ice is important to you, do you really need it taking up 20% of the fridge space up top in the door? Or can you deal with the emotional trauma of regular cubes instead of crushed ice in your drink and have that mechanism located in the freezer section?

Remember that all these peripherals cost extra and depending on the design can have an impact on your experience with the product.

Integrated fridges are something of a difficulty.

For the most part, repairs can be undertaken without removing the fridge from the cabinetry.

However, sometimes it’s necessary to access the rear and for that we do need to remove the fridge.

The repair can be simple enough. However, refitting it back into the cabinetry can be problematic.

Houses move over time. Cabinetry bends and distorts. The repair might take 30 minutes for example, however, adjusting the cabinetry 3mm one way or another can be frustratingly longer.

Ovens dehydrate food. That’s what they do. They have to. It’s basic science. What and how you cook affects how juicy and moist tender the product will be.

Fundamentally, ovens work the same way. They have a variety of elements in assorted locations and a fan to circulate the hot air. They have funky functions like aero bake, air fry, 4D hot air.

Basically, that all means the same thing aka “Fan Forced”.

Which oven is best? Good lord… that’s a loaded question.

While we’re asking questions how about these:

- What and how do you cook?
- What functions do to want?
- What’s the frequency of use?
- Do you cook simple food or are you a gastro norm who likes to play and experiment?
- What’s your budget?
- What aesthetic do you like?

The best oven is the one that suits your needs; not the needs of social media.

The answers to the above will determine the answer to the first question.

If you’d like some advice, don’t hesitate to ask in the comments section below.
