๐ฅWrapping up a fantastic National Sports & Physical Activity Convention!
The event gathered a diverse group, from government entities like the Australian Sports Commission, to local councils such as the City of Melbourne, and numerous sports associations. The common thread? A desire to ensure the sustainability of sports and physical activity for future generations. Our focus at The LOTE Agency? How to better engage with Australia's multicultural communities through sports and physical activity.
Highlights included hearing from the ASC about the future of participation and capacity building for the sports sector and the AFL about investing in creating opportunities for every household to find a way to connect with sports and grow the game, and of course, Tim Anderson discussing the crucial role of multicultural audience engagement in boosting sports participation and performance. It offered valuable insights into how the sports industry can adapt and thrive in our increasingly multicultural society.

Last weekend, our Community and Engagement team members had the chance to participate in this year's Antipodes Festival here in Melbourne.
The Greek Centre put on an incredible festival, which showcased diverse food and performances. It was fantastic to see the crowds that came to our stall, try our 360 photo booth and talk about the importance of community events.
As Australia's diversity grows, it's increasingly important for organisations to engage with more people from CALD backgrounds to better understand and communicate effectively. The LOTE Agency enables this by connecting organisations with its multicultural network built up over twenty-five years, and we are always on the lookout for more research and community engagement participants.

We're excited to announce that LOTE will be participating in this year's Antipodes Festival at Lonsdale Street here in Melbourne from the 25-26 February!
This festival is held annually by The Greek Centre to showcase various Greek food, as well as international and local performances including this year's main performance by international singer Alkistis Protopsalti.
It's important to note how significant the Greek community is here by acknowledging that over 400,000 of Melbourne's population identifies themselves as Greek descent. In support of this celebration, LOTE will be holding a stall to show our support in highlighting the rich and beautiful Greek culture that we have in Melbourne.
If you'd like to be a part of this, please come and check us out at stall W56 where you'll meet some of our Community and Engagement team. We'll also be having our own 360 photo booth as well as sharing research and community engagement opportunities for you to be a part of, so stay tuned on the day for more!
Melbourne Water holds a fun family day for the community.
As part of their strategy to improve water literacy among the community, Melbourne Water recently invited community members to a free, fun family day at Healesville Sanctuary. The day was designed to educate visitors about our native Australian wildlife and to help make litter extinct from our waterways. LOTEโs community engagement team on the day tell us moreโฆ
โThe day started with a beautiful Welcome to Country conducted by Murrundindi (Wurundjeri Elder). The community members were fully engaged throughout the day, with the Melbourne Water team running a small tour to discover the Koalas, Kangaroos, Reptiles, Parrots, and Platypus exhibits. The group also sat in on the fantastic Spirit of the Skies show, which gave them an appreciation of our native birds. Then moving on to lunch and went through the Melbourne Water activation showing the importance of waterbugs in our waterways.โ
By making the day fun and interactive for everyone that attended, the key message of making litter extinct from our waterways is much more likely to be remembered. As our Head of Community Engagement predicted, 2023 will see an increase in face-to-face engagement activity.
With the advent of summer and, sadly, 38 drowning deaths so far, it's critical that more is done to educate the Australian community on water safety. The LOTE Agency's Head of Communities and Strategy, Kwabena Ansah, was interviewed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) about how swimming clubs and organisations such as Swimming NSW are reaching out to culturally and linguistically diverse communities to ensure everyone can feel safe around the water.
Swimming clubs aim to make learning to swim a priority for CALD Australians With the advent of Summer, swimming clubs and organisations are reaching out to culturally and linguistically diverse communities to ensure everyone can feel safe around the water.
We are back on deck at The LOTE Agency and ready to help our clients engage with diverse communities across Australia in 2023. With so many exciting projects in the works already, it looks set to be another massive year!
The LOTE Agency's Research Intern, Manahil Rahmati, attended the Gala Dinner of the Bhutanese Community in Broadmeadows Townhall to celebrate the 115th anniversary of their kingdom. A fantastic multicultural evening full of friendly faces.
โI enjoyed the whole multiculturalism aspect and how many different organisations gathered to celebrate. I was Altaf Hussein's guest, and his organisation is VAYA (Victorian Afghan Youth Association); through that, I was given the opportunity to attend the event.โ
LOTE National Advisory Group member Dr Aparna Hebbani discussed our research on the experience of CALD communities with utility providers on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) television and radio news this morning.
Inequity in the energy sector is a real challenge for those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and The LOTE Agency is pleased to be working with a number of companies in the sector to close the gap.
Our CEO, David Bartlett, along with Carla Rada Prudencio from our Community Engagement team, spent the last two days at the Purpose Conference in Sydney, learning from the likes of Andrew Apostola and Grace Tame.
The LOTE Agency is a purpose-driven organisation, and we only take on work that we believe will make a positive social impact. But there is always more to do, and we look forward to applying the learnings from the last couple of days.
Sustainability Victoria recently partnered with us to commission murals that would reach multicultural audiences and communicate how to make greener choices on household waste and recycling.
We know from our research that CALD communities havenโt been able to easily access this information due to language and cultural barriers. Our work with Sustainability Victoria is about ensuring everyone knows the simple changes we can all make.
