10,000 pillowcases!

Recently Monster Smiles was featured in That's Life magazine! I was hoping to make a big impact and raise awareness about Monster Smiles aiming to bring more smiles to children in hospitals and foster care. While the response wasn't quite what I expected, with only 4 sales, it's still progress! Every bit counts, right?

On a personal note, I'm grateful to share that my Crohn's Disease is stable these days. It's been quite a journey, but I've found a routine that works for me. The gym has been a game-changer, along with identifying and eliminating foods my body is sensitive to. Thanks to a hair analysis test, I was able to pinpoint these foods - it's amazing what modern science can do!

Now, here's the real highlight: Since Monster Smiles began in 2021, Monster Smiles has donated a whopping 10,000 pillowcases to children in hospitals and foster care! I have always reinvested any profits into creating more smiles.

I've hustled in every way imaginable - from appearing on Telethon and Sunrise Channel 7 to serving as an ambassador for Crohn's & Colitis. In 2022, I even won the Local Champion award! From selling online, at markets, to recycling cans and bottles, selling chocolates and unique-named seedlings, to recycling council verge collection items and selling them online, and even dealing with scrap metal, I've kept myself busy!

Thanks to each and every one of you who've supported this journey. Together, we're making a difference, one smile at a time. Let's keep spreading those Monster Smiles!

Today I received an email from the Manager at Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation in Adelaide thanking me for the huge donation of pillowcases.

The pillowcases will be distributed amongst the wards, the Gastroenterology Unit, the WCH Chronic Pain service, the paediatric ward at Flinders Hospital and Lyell McEwin Hospital.

Next week I should be in That’s Life magazine in The Volunteer of the Week section. I have no idea what photos have been used so that will be a surprise. I sent a large amount of photos and I know they were choosing 3 to use.

SEARCHING FOR THE OWNER OF THIS PHOTO

Exciting news! I will be appearing in That’s Life magazine soon in the section ‘Volunteer of the Week’.

Would the owner of this photo please contact me? This photo was taken at Perth Children’s Hospital August of last year.

600 pillowcases are packed and waiting at the front door to be collected tomorrow.

Pillowcases will be on the way to Canberra, Adelaide and the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. The Starlight Captains will visit the sick children on the Wards and hand the monsters out.

Someone asked “How long did it take to pack them?” My guess is at least 50 hours when I roughly calculated how long it takes per pillowcase to inspect, fold, pack and sticker.

A BIG thank you to everyone that has helped me. I couldn’t do this without you all. A special thank you to Kay & Roger for fundraising at their Christmas Lights display and donating 400 pillowcases.

PS I am now trying to organise pillowcases for the remaining Starlights at the other hospitals.

Today I was at Perth Children’s Hospital for an IV infusion.

I took pillowcases and handed them out to children all over the hospital. Wow! What a difference these little monsters made. The excitement and disbelief on the children’s faces when they received a fun pillowcase to keep was magical.

A little girl didn’t want to ‘risk’ putting the pillowcase on a hospital pillow as she thought it would become the hospital’s pillowcase and no way was she leaving the monsters behind!

It didn’t matter how much her mum reassured her they were indeed going home she wasn’t going to ‘risk’ anything. So she held her new pillowcase tightly during her entire treatment.

My blood test results are excellent! The recent iron infusion made a huge difference and I have no more headaches or dizziness.

I have been busy packing pillowcases for hospitals and they will be collected next week.

Thank you to everyone that helps me create smiles for sick kids. To see the smiles on sick children’s faces is the reason why I do what I do.

TODAY’S APPOINTMENT

Today I had an iron infusion. Hopefully this will increase my iron levels and the headaches, dizziness and fatigue that I have been experiencing will disappear.

My appointment was delayed by 2 hours due to staffing issues so rather than sit around and wait, I walked around the hospital handing out pillowcases to the children.

A little 4 year old boy in the Day Treatment Ward was incredibly upset about receiving an IV cannula. I could hear his cries, screams and distress when he was in the cannulation room from my room.

I left a pillowcase on his bed as a surprise for when he returned. I never got to see his reaction to the monsters as my treatment had finished and I had to leave.

I can only hope that the monsters provided him comfort and that he sleeps well tonight with his new pillowcase.

Thank you to everyone who buys/donates pillowcases to help create smiles. The difference the pillowcases made to sooo many children today is so worth what we do.

PILLOWCASES TRAVELLED TO LONDON

David took the pillowcases to London, England for Christmas gifts for his family.

This week I received a photo from a little girl who struggles with her health and her mum thanking me for the pillowcase they received. The pillowcase provided comfort and smiles when she really needed it. I am so glad that the monsters provided comfort at a difficult time.

Today I posted a large bundle of pillowcases to Port Lincoln Hospital, SA for the children.

I am back in hospital within the next 2 weeks for an iron infusion as my numbers are really low. I look forward to delivering more pillowcases to the children then.

TODAY’S APPOINTMENT

Today was the infusion for my Crohn’s disease. I haven’t grown taller or put on weight.

2 staff members from Livewire helped me hand out pillowcases to the children in need of smiles. Today the upset children created a lot of noise on the ward.

There were many of them. It is terrifying for them to receive an IV or injections. I know how terrifying this can be especially when you don’t have good veins.

The pillowcases not only took their mind off their ‘bad’ day but turned their negative experience into hopefully a bit more positive one.

I took my bag of pens and handed all of the nurses one. They do such an amazing job.

Monster Morgan always goes to my appointments. Thanks Winsome! Thank you also for the gift card. I desperately needed a new basketball as the grip was no longer ‘grippy’ and my new basketball is just GREAT!

Thank you to everyone that helps me create Monster Smiles. The pillowcases make such a difference and to know that the upset children are sleeping with their Monster pillowcases tonight after their traumatic day makes me think that what I do is really important.

Rory – just diagnosed with Leukemia and it’s his 5th Birthday soon!

Rory has just been diagnosed with Leukemia. He has had to leave his home in Canberra and relocate to Sydney for treatment.

I have posted 40 pillowcases for Rory to hand out on his birthday to other children in hospital and Ronald McDonald House. It seriously is the best feeling creating smiles and I hope this will make everyone’s day a little bit brighter.

THE MONSTERS HAVE HAD A LONG JOURNEY!

After TWO months the box of 150 monster pillowcases has finally arrived at Alice Springs Hospital for the children.

The pillowcases travelled from Perth to Darwin to South Australia, back to Darwin and then to Alice Springs! I am glad the box arrived in tact!

Yesterday I attended this very special event at the Perth Convention Centre. Children with special needs were invited to join in and have fun at the Christmas Party.

The children were excited to receive a Monsters pillowcase. Children who received a pillowcase last year thanked me again for their pillowcase and they proudly admitted they won’t sleep with any other pillowcase. I love these stories.

LANDON HADN’T SMILED FOR DAYS

I received this lovely thank you message from Krystal and Landon:

“I just wanted to drop by and thank you for what you are doing!

My son Landon who is 6yrs old very suddenly became unwell on Saturday night and was admitted to our local hospital in Roxby Downs. Landon was quickly transported by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Port Augusta Hospital for further testing.

During his stay Landon was given a Monster Smiles pillowcase which made his day! I hadn’t seen him smile in days and this brought one to his face. He used it on a pillow to support his cannula, which he was pretty nervous about.

The pillowcase took his mind off of things as we counted and found all the different monsters.

Thank you for bringing smiles to sick children’s faces.”

I checked in to see how Landon is going and he is improving daily. 🙂

A BIG MONSTER THANK YOU TO ELSIE

Elsie (12 years old) raised funds selling polymer clay creations at her school stalls and to family and friends. 200 pillowcases were donated on Elsie’s behalf today to children in Perth Children’s Hospital. Wow!

Today I met with Raya, a volunteer, to help me deliver Elsie’s Monster Smiles pillowcases. We visited most of the wards and the ‘broken bones’ (fractures) clinic. The children were so happy to receive the pillowcases. One young boy excitedly wrapped the pillowcase around his body and impatiently waited until his dad could put the monsters on his pillow.

Monster Eee (one of Elsie’s clever creations) went along for the adventure. I kept him in my pocket as I didn’t want to lose him. He is awesome!

I took pens and handed them out to the nurses. Word quickly spread that I had pens and the nurses and I had a group photo.

I also took Lil’s knitted dogs. Lil is 97 years old, with arthritic hands, but she just loves to knit dogs for me to find children to give them to. They are knitted with so much love. Thanks Lil.

Thank you again Elsie for your very generous and kind help, creating smiles for children going through difficult times in their lives.

YESTERDAY’S APPOINTMENT & FANTASTIC NEWS!

Yesterday I had an IV infusion for the Crohn’s disease. Only one attempt was needed with the cannular.

Working out at the gym is really helping with the veins but I am struggling to gain weight. I lost nearly 2kg and I grew less than ½ cm taller. I will try and eat more and increase my weight in the next 2 months.

I received my blood test results today. These are exciting! My CRP (C Reactive Protein) which has never been normal in my entire life is NORMAL at 3.6. CRP checks for inflammation in the body. Also my haemoglobin is 129 and NORMAL too so I didn’t need an iron infusion.

Monster Morgan kept me company (thanks Winsome). He is always the 1st to be put in the car.

I took 2 crates of pillowcases and restocked the Day Treatment Unit and Post Op Wards. I also took heaps of pillowcases to give to children on the way to my appointment. I handed out pillowcases in the carpark, the elevators, at the waiting rooms, just wherever I saw children that looked like they needed a smile. They certainly made a difference.

Next weekend Dad and I are going to the Special Kid’s Christmas Party. I will try and not get excited until we have arrived at the party. I was so excited for Telethon but mum got rushed to hospital for gallbladder surgery and Dad and I got Covid. At least Telethon has invited us back next year.
