Only a handful of tickets remain to our return season of 21 HEARTS: VIVIAN BULLWINKEL AND THE NURSES OF THE VYNER BROOKE!
OCT 30 - NOV 10
COMO THEATRE, 16 Preston Street
Vivian Bullwinkel was one of 65 Australian Army Nurses who boarded the Vyner Brooke in an attempt to flee the Japanese invasion of Singapore in February, 1942. Bombed by Japanese fighter planes and after spending days at sea, she and some other survivors found their way to Radji Beach on Bangka Island where they surrendered. In one of the most atrocious acts of war crimes in our history, 22 nurses were forced to march into the sea where they were callously machine gunned. The only survivor and witness, Vivian spent the rest of the war in a prison camp before liberation, and her remaining years fighting for recognition of the bravery of her friends and colleagues; their strength and courage in the face of death sustaining her for the rest of her illustrious life.
21 Hearts relays the resilient Aussie humour displayed by the women in the camp and provides a respectful and authentic voice to those who were silenced, remembering them for who they were and not just for what happened to them.
A story of hope, courage, resilience and heart.
Featuring 6 of WA’s most outstanding actors, 21 HEARTS is a celebration of the human spirit and an uplifting, inspiring story which reminds us of the great futility of war.

ALBANY 2026 PROJECT
Oral History Reminiscence Workshop for all ages
“Our Place, Rain or Shine”, is an oral history project about Albany, its history, its place in the world and why it’s such a great place to live. This will eventually lead to a live theatre production as part of the city’s Bicentenary in 2026. The project aims to acknowledge the personal stories which connect us to place; stories which help us gain an understanding and appreciation of a connection to geographical places in the Albany region.
Whether you have a story to share, whether you are a writer or performer who would like to be involved via radio or stage, whether you are a historian with local knowledge, whether you simply have recollections of an earlier Albany, stories from yesterday, or whether you are just up for a group chat and a cuppa, we would love to meet with you!
THEATRE 180 has a 30+ year history of collecting oral histories and turning them into theatre, with projects ranging from small to large-scale. In 2023 we received a Western Australian Heritage Award for Contribution by a Community Based Organisation.
Our recent productions in Albany include The Lighthouse Girl Saga, SYDNEY II: Lost and Found and A.B. Facey's A Fortunate Life.

Great Stories Well Told
THEATRE 180 has a 27-year history of telling stories. Founded in reminiscence programs and oral history capture which bridge generations, we have produced world premieres and extant scripts which have played in Perth, around WA, Australia and including international tours to the UK. In 2020 we launched a new genre with CinemaStage which combines the immediacy of theatre with the visual impact of cinema, cementing us at the forefront of innovation in creative thinking.
Our three Pillars of activity – Main Stage and Studio Productions, Education and Regional Touring, and our grassroots Agelink Pillar, see us targeting audiences from young to old, a 180 degree perspective which embeds THEATRE 180 in the heart of what it means to be human; committed to telling stories which reflect on our past in order to understand the present and imagine our future.
