In May, we are celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month. During his first trip to Australia, we had a conversation with Viet Thanh Nguyen, the Vietnamese-American professor and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sympathizer, about the significance of this month for AA and NHPI communities.

To commemorate IDAHOBIT - the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia – we were privileged to have a conversation with Judy and Dennis Shepard during their visit to Australia to promote human rights. Judy shared her vision that everyone should be able to live an authentic life. In memory of their son, Matthew, Judy and Dennis have been working for the last 25 years to raise awareness of the discrimination still facing the LGBTQ+ community, like so many marginalized communities. The Matthew Shepard Foundation’s mission is to amplify Matthew’s story, powerfully told in the award-winning play The Laramie Project, to inspire individuals, organizations, and communities to embrace the dignity and equality of all people. 🔗 Find out more: https://www.matthewshepard.org/

Last week, on April 25, U.S. Marines and Sailors with Marine Rotational Force Darwin joined Australian Defence Force members and veterans to commemorate Anzac Day in Darwin, the Northern Territory.

Ambassador Kennedy joined ABC Radio Broken Hill this week for an inspiring conversation about innovation, collaboration, and driving change in the fight against cancer. Plus a few road trip bangers from the Ambassador's Sh*tbox Rally playlist!

📺 Ambassador Kennedy will soon drive a 2004 Ford Falcon into the Australian outback — starting in Adelaide — to raise funds for the Cancer Council as part of the Sh*tbox Rally. This Sunday, she speaks to 60 Minutes Australia about the 🇦🇺🇺🇸 cancer research that gives her hope and takes us for a spin in her sh*tbox.

Next month, Ambassador Kennedy will be “fanging it” across Australia in a Ford Falcon - part of the Sh*tbox Rally to raise funds for Cancer Council Australia. To get ready for the Rally, she stopped by the Ford Australia headquarters in Melbourne. The company has been a part of Australian motor history since 1904, when the first Ford vehicle was imported. Over a hundred years later, Australian critical minerals will play an essential role in Ford’s electric vehicle production - bringing the partnership between Ford and Australia into a cleaner future. Many thanks to Ford’s Joe Agati for showing us his 1967 XR Falcon GT! Ford has supported the global fight against cancer for over 30 years and we’re thrilled to be driving a Ford Falcon across the Outback.

One year ago, President Biden, Prime Minister Albanese, and Prime Minister Sunak announced the way forward on AUKUS. Ambassador Kennedy recently visited Osborne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide, South Australia and reflected on the one-year anniversary of the leaders' announcement: "[AUKUS is] going to bring thousands of new and exciting jobs, the most advanced technology, and the most exciting opportunities to young Australians, Americans and British, all working together to keep this region and our countries safe.” --Ambassador Kennedy

Where's Oodnadatta? This April, we're going to find out. As part of the U.S. Embassy and Consulate's U.S.-Australia Cancer Moonshot Initiative, we're joining Sh*tbox Rally in support of Cancer Council Australia and Australia's world-leading cancer researchers, whose work benefits us all. “Like every family, my family and Embassy families have lost too many people we love to cancer. In September 2022, on the 60th anniversary of President Kennedy’s Moonshot speech, President Biden relaunched the Cancer Moonshot: an ambitious, whole-of-government effort to end cancer as we know it. We know that no one country can end the fight against cancer alone, and the United States has no better partner in this fight than Australia. This initiative will highlight the work being done in both the United States and Australia to advance research, share best practices, and improve the lives of people with cancer, survivors, and their families.” -- Ambassador Kennedy Our goal is to raise as much as we can!
