We wanted to thank you all on our first 1,000 followers. While a 1,000 on social media doesn't mean a lot - knowing that 1,000 people support us brings us a lot of joy. And we're doing it by reclaiming a quote [sic] from a bizarre rant by the conservative Australian politician, Bob Katter during the Australian marriage equality debate of 2017 (and yes, the quote is a grammatical nightmare). Here's why - Reclamation of words and slogans has been an important facet of queer history. It gives us the power to write our own narratives and in our own language. It provides us a fundamental human apparatus -  agency. Media outlets wrote as late as 2019 that the resurgence of the former slur 'queer' in the community was not welcomed by everyone. But it now makes 5/7th of our name. It still may harbour mixed feelings among some in the community - but its reclamation is a show of resilience and strength. We'll end on Katter again. He also noted during 2017 that the queer community had 'stolen' the word gay - "once the most beautiful word in the English language". To him we say - we used it correctly. Thank you to you all! #EnQueerSydney #EnQueer #Queer #Sydney #Literature #queerliterature

Did you miss us? After a successful virtual debut in 2021, EnQueer is excited to return with an in-person festival in November 2022. We have been working in the background trying to ensure that we can continue to feature and celebrate queer voices and experiences to the best of our abilities. Expressions of interest for writers open soon.  [ID: A picture of the shadow of a queer couple kissing against a rainbow spectrum with text overlay saying "In the Flesh - November 2022" and the logo of EnQueer Sydney Queer Writers' Festival] #Enqueer2022 #EnQueerSydney #queer #literature
