- trigger warning - pregnancy loss -
Pregnancy loss is not something women get the space to talk about a lot, but it's something many women experience & requires utmost care and support to navigate. It's so important to have a practitioner, family & community support & awareness.
Early miscarriage is when an embryo is spontaneously expelled from the uterus before 12 wks at absolutely no fault to you. There are three categories; threatened, inevitable or missed. Threatened miscarriages are what women are most likely to seek preventative support from us for, or similarly, if there is a previous history of miscarriage, however we support women who have had any of these experiences. There can be warning signs such as bleeding, lower back ache, and abdominal cramping. Thankfully, these symptoms alone do not give you an outcome, that's what ultrasound check-in's are for. Our treatments focus on preventing threatened miscarriages, and supporting you using integrative care.

Heartburn and Pregnancy: In TCM we view Stomach Qi as there to "rotten and ripen" (digest), while Spleen Qi "transforms and transports" nutrients. Together they help ensure direction of food, so during pregnancy we focus on supporting these systems with most GIT issues.
the first trimester is a big time of transition for the body. For many people it’s accompanied by our “good friend“ morning sickness🤮 .
Luckily as acupuncturist’s we have a few tricks up our sleeves to help ease this.
Research shows women having acupuncture with preeclampsia stay pregnant for an average of 9 days later. Acupuncture can be a fabulous support for many conditions while pregnant
Each trimester of pregnancy places different demands on the mother’s body for key nutrients as the foetus enters various stages of growth and development. Naturopathic support ensures you are obtaining all of the required levels of nutrients to optimise the health of both mum and bub and may reduce pregnancy complications. Contact our Naturopath for more information.
Seeing mamas regularly during this first trimester works to support establishing a pregnancy and helping with symptoms as they arise 🙌🏽
Let’s talk about the 4 letter word and how it can negatively impact birth…
FEAR
When we experience fear, our body responds by releasing stress hormone which inhibits natural pain-relieving endorphins from being produced. We go into a sympathetic state of ‘fight, flight, freeze or appease’ and oxygenated blood is sent to the defence systems of the body instead of the uterine muscles. As a result oxygen deprived muscles become taught and tense and have to work harder to move the baby down, creating pain.
This usually leads to FTP (Failure to Progress) or what could be deemed as ‘Fear Tension Pain’ syndrome. This then leads to a cascade of interventions in birth.
Learning ways to clear fears before birth, along with techniques to promote relaxation and feelings of a safe, supportive space is paramount.

Making informed, fear free decisions during pregnancy or birth can be a challenge when you are being confronted with interventions you hoped wouldn’t be required.
When you participate in a Hypnobirthing Australia Childbirth program, there are many things you learn, amongst the tools and techniques is this little acronym B.R.A.I.N.
When being faced with options with your birth, follow this simple guide:
First ask “is there an indication that the birthing mother or baby are in danger?”
B – Benefits… What are the benefits for mother and baby?
R – Risks… What are the risks of this intervention for mother and baby?
A – Alternatives… Are there any other alternatives we could try first?
I – Instincts… What are my instincts telling me based on knowledge and not fear?
N – Nothing… What if do nothing and just give it more time? Is that an option?

Reiki during Pregnancy and Postpartum is timely and impactful...pregnancy and motherhood are times of rapid change and Reiki is a gentle way to help make all of the changes much more manageable, while keeping you connected to your baby. Reiki is a centuries-old healing art from Japan that uses light touch on, or just above the body, to help facilitate deep relaxation, promote balance, healing and an optimal state of well-being. Reiki during early pregnancy relieves many common discomforts such as exhaustion and nausea. Safe and gentle, Reiki will support the mother's body as she grows and changes, and can give relief to lower back pain, tension in the neck and shoulders and insomnia. The common ‘fog’ of pregnancy is often lifted after a Reiki treatment. Relieved of some of the physical and emotional discomforts of pregnancy, the expectant mother will sleep more soundly and will feel more relaxed and connected with her baby.
You are not alone if you’re experiencing lower back pain during pregnancy. Lower back pain affects between 30-70% of expecting mums. While it can occur in the first trimester, it usually occurs during the 5th to 7th month of pregnancy. Along with back pain, acupuncture and herbs could help with relieving many other symptoms that come with pregnancy including nausea and acid reflux. Speak to one of our acupuncturists to find out how we can support you during your pregnancy.
Iron deficiency affects 12% of pregnant women in Australia. In Chinese culture, a herbal soup is given to women to nourish and build the blood after a period. The special chicken soup includes herbs such as Goji berries, Longan fruit, ginger and Chinese yam. This soup is also great for people who want to build up their iron levels.
While cooking up this soup may not be as convenient as an iron tablet, our herbalists can prescribe a herbal formula for you to achieve the same effects without the hassle.
