And now these incredible versions of my new female dwarf figure, painted again by my old friend

It's so amazing to see my sculpt painted in two such contrasting ways! The 'classic' scheme looks incredible, and then with a few subtle changes to the sculpt and a wild colour concept, Kyle has transformed the second one into something completely different!

I would love to see your painted versions too! Please share and tag me so I can check out yours 🙏

Amazing duo of my new dwarf figure, painted by my good friend

Kyle wanted to show how you can interpret a sculpt completely differently with painting - it's amazing how the entire figure is transformed through paint! 🎨

Which one do you prefer? I'd love to see your interpretation too, please share yours 🙏

👉 The Dwarves are available right now at my webstore!

Humble beginnings. This is a photo from a while back when I first started the 'old orc' - and another secret figure I haven't shown online yet!

This is the basic blocking out of volume just to get a base of clay down, before starting the proper sculpting.

Ding d**g, the Tea Vendor is here! Who wants to try her brew? 🫖

Stock has arrived at last, so she is available to buy right now on my site. (veiledlamp.com)

She is traditionally hand-sculpted in clay at 1:12 scale (size approx 8cm x 7cm)

This character is based on a beautifully whimsical artwork by Gary Laib

Many thanks to Gary for agreeing to my little homage to his wonderful Tea Vendor artwork. 🙌

I have barely started this and I'm not yet sure whether I will continue, but I had an idea to make a sculpt where the figure is looking over her shoulder, with the main viewing angle from behind.

It seems like an unusual idea with potential - it could be a bit tricky but I wonder if it could work? 🤔

⚒️ The Dwarves - out now! ⚒️

Hand-sculpted by me and produced right here in Australia. Available now on my site:

The main challenge here was sculpting the female. I used the male dwarf to establish some changes to the facial anatomy (compared to a human), in order to make him look dwarven. Then for the female I needed to somehow incorporate these changes - which are all exaggerations of masculine traits - but at the same time try to keep her looking feminine. Quite an interesting challenge!

Academic busts: a mostly blank canvas to hone your painting skills and get creative! I'd love to see your interesting or unusual interpretations of these dwarves.

Are you all gonna be upset with me if I give this handsome gentleman some hair, beard and eyebrows like this? 😇

Photos from Veiled Lamp's post 07/02/2024

One more look at this painted piece and I'll stop bothering and get back to sculpting - honest! 😇

Here's the side view where you can see how I made this pseudo-forced perspective effect. Everything in the scene shrinks by about 40% as it moves from the front to the back. I measured the angles to meet at a common vanishing point in the hope that the front view would give a forced perspective sense of depth (last image)

This was an experiment to see if something like this is possible without making the viewer look through a window or peephole, as I prefer open scenes for miniature vignettes. Not everything was a complete success, but I think it worked well enough to be an interesting idea we could try to improve on in the future.

Some close-ups of the two mermaids from my entry over the weekend.

The mermaid on the left was sculpted by - I sculpted the mermaid on the right myself, to match (it is a modification of another sculpture of mine, the Daughter of the Firmament).

I have owned Romain's figure for years and years so it was great to finally have the chance to paint it!

A quick snap of my entry from competition over the weekend. It was a real pleasure to participate as a contestant this year (I have been a judge the previous few years) and I had a blast watching it all unfold! I was very pleased to win a gold medal in the new master category.

The larger mermaid in the foreground was sculpted by - everything else in this piece was sculpted or custom made by me.

I will post more about this piece soon, but it was an experiment to see if a kind of pseudo-forced perspective design might work for a miniature vignette like this. Everything in this piece shrinks in size/height by about 50% as it moves towards the back wall, and the ground and walls are dramatically angled. You will see what I mean next when I post more photos showing the side view!

judging in progress. 🎨

It's weird being on this side of the fence! Great seeing my friends , and new friend in action 😎

30 year old paints!

I have a few old citadel paints that have now turned 30 years old, and are still in use. I know they're 30 coz when I was a kid my parents got me the Warhammer box set (plastic elves and goblins!) for Christmas 1993, along with some paints. That was my first introduction to miniatures. And the paints have lasted all this time - wow!

Now they are seeing action once again as I'm painting my entry for

What do you think - is this stage nearly finished...? I am planning to bake this soon and then add some hair and eyebrows. Let me know in the comments if you think I need to add or change anything before I lock this in!

This orc sculpture is inspired by a super cool sketch by Carlo Arellano . It has been a very interesting study so far.

Step-by-step sculpting progress photos of Batara Kala.

This sculpt was unusual because I did not start with a firm idea. I just plunged in with some clay and a vague idea of a troll-like monster. As the sculpting progressed, the concept crystallised into the Javanese Wayang inspired final result.

Resin bust available now on my site: veiledlamp.com

I moved to a new home over the weekend, and now have this dedicated studio space to set up.

It will be nice to have a small space of my own again 😎 I was sharing with my baby daughter but now that she is getting older (almost 3) she deserves a proper bedroom of her own, too!

My good friend Jared painted this incredible version of my new Tea Vendor bust for SMC and Monte! Such wonderful painting. The colour and textures are beautiful but I like her face the best, Jared's painting makes her come alive with character and expression.
