Today is the start of World Breastfeeding Week and this year’s theme is “Enabling breastfeeding: making a difference for working parents.”

Here in Australia there is definitely movement in the right direction when it comes to paid parental leave and last month PPL was increased to 100 days or 20 weeks at the national minimum wage.

In the U.S. there is no federal paid maternity and family leave act. None. Some states do have legislation for paid parental leave and some companies do offer paid leave but there is no federal law.

Compare this to Sweden who offer 480 days of paid leave to parents and the gap is huge. Swedish parents receive parental leave at 80% of their regular wages. Unlike many countries which don’t extend the leave for multiple births, an additional 180 days are granted for each additional child.

How does paid parental leave impact breastfeeding? According to the WABA workplace challenges remain the most common reason women never breastfeed or stop breastfeeding earlier than recommended.

Women should be supported to breastfeed their baby for as long as they want to.

If you found breastfeeding hard you're not alone. If you had moments when you disliked breastfeeding, you're not alone.

A new study, which looked at over 5,500 Australian breastfeeding mums noted that most women reported having some breastfeeding challenges with some reporting feelings of aversion. The study described this as breastfeeding aversion response (BAR).

"This recently named breastfeeding challenge is defined as feelings of aversion while breastfeeding for the entire time that the child is latched."

The study found that of the Australian breastfeeding women who participated, just over one in five self-identified as having experienced a BAR.

Most women reported experiencing some breastfeeding challenges, with only 4.5% having had no breastfeeding complications.

Despite most women reporting some difficulties breastfeeding, nearly 90% of the total women in this study rated their overall breastfeeding experience as good, or very good, and 82.5% of those who experience the feelings of aversion during feeding as good or very good.

What do you make of the findings?

What mum isn't stressed or anxious?

But did you know that breastfeeding can help you to feel calmer and more relaxed?

When you breastfeed your baby, your body releases hormones including oxytocin and prolactin, which can leave you feeling more relaxed and less stressed. What's more, feeding can also promote feelings of love and bonding between mum and bub.

There's a reason oxytocin is often called the "love hormone" 😍

Of course if you're struggling to breastfeed there is nothing more stressful and it's always worth seeking professional help with an IBCLC lactation consultant.

Do / did you find breastfeeding relaxing? We'd love to know!

Mum hack: You use the Rose Liquid Gold silicone pump while feeding to catch the let-down from the breast you're not nursing on.

Milk that would normally be lost into a breast pad or bra can be collected easily at the same time you're feeding your bub.

How's that for multitasking?

With winter very nearly upon us the prospect of colds and the flu is daunting, particularly for mums of small bubs.

The Australian Breastfeeding Association states: It is well known that breastfed babies are less likely to get infections than formula-fed babies. Breastmilk contains many factors that help support a baby’s immune system. When you breastfeed your baby, you pass on lots of proteins, fats, sugars and cells that work against infections. The cells include antibodies, white blood cells, lactoferrin, lysozyme, oligosaccharides, probiotics and prebiotics.
When you come into contact with germs in your environment, you make antibodies to fight those germs. These antibodies pass into your breastmilk and therefore on to your baby. Since you and your baby are generally in contact with the same germs, this helps protect your baby from the illnesses that you are both exposed to.

With all of those incredible properties you won’t want to waste a drop, which is where our Rose Liquid Gold Silicone pump comes in.

No wonder mums are tired! A year of breastfeeding equates to 1,800 hours, according to one estimate, while a 40 hour job with three weeks holiday is around 1,960 hours.

When you add in the nappy changes, the cuddles, the comforting, the washing, the sleep deprivation and all the other parts of the 24 hour role that comes with being a mother, it's no wonder that so many mums are left feeling depleted.

What about the mums who are working and breastfeeding or pumping milk for their bubs too?

Anyone else feel tired just reading about this? 🙋‍♀️

Did you know that the composition of your breastmilk changes throughout the day and night?

Breastmilk produced at night contains high levels of melatonin, a hormone that helps to induce sleep. This helps your baby develop a circadian rhythm, the internal system which helps to differentiate between day and night.

So, if you want to give your baby a bottle before bed it's probably a good idea to give milk that was pumped at night too.

Never miss a drop of the melatonin rich milk by using the Rose Liquid Gold Silicone Pump when you feed bub before bed.

Have you ever seen pink, green or even blue breastmilk?
While colostrum is a yellow liquid and breastmilk is a whitish hue, breastmilk can be a wide variety of colours including pink, blue, green, orange and yellow. These colours can all be very normal and safe to feed your baby.
Colour changes can occur due to diet, often being impacted by food colourings and dyes. Eaten a lot of beetroot? Your milk may be pink, too much carrot and pumpkin and it could have an orange colouring.
The Australian Breastfeeding Association says: “In most cases, the colour of your breastmilk is nothing to be worries about. However check with your doctor or child health nurse if you’re concerned.”
Have you ever noticed a different colour to your breastmilk?

“All I know is women should always feel empowered, educated and supported in how they choose to feed their baby.”

Six months after stopping feeding her son at 18 months old, Rachel is still processing her breastfeeding journey.

In her story, Rachel reveals the pressure she felt to make breastfeeding work, saying she was “driven by a need to prove to myself and everyone else, I was the mother who was good enough for him.”

A feeling that many mums will relate to.

Do you find yourself feeling ravenous while breastfeeding? Well, there’s a good reason for it. Studies show that lactating mamas need around 500 extra calories per day.

What’s more, it’s though that breastfeeding mamas use between 15 and 25% of their energy producing milk and feeding their baby. By comparison, the brain uses around 20% and is the hungriest organ in the body.

Some food for thought this Easter (and every single day).🐣

Don’t waste any more energy than you have to, or a single drop of your let-down, by using our Rose Liquid Gold pump while you feed. It’s every breastfeeding mama’s BFF.

When baby Beau arrived unexpectedly at 32 weeks and six days, he went to the special care nursery and was put on a feeding tube.

For new mum Vikki, what followed was a rigorous expressing schedule, which evolved into a demanding pumping schedule, all while trying to spend as much time as possible in the hospital with her little boy.

After three weeks Beau surprised everyone by breastfeeding for the first time.

Now, Vikki says that their breastfeeding journey is “better than ever,” but there have been plenty of highs and lows along the way.

Did you know that breastmilk is a living substance?

Breastmilk contains living cells like white blood cells and stem cells, as well as probiotics and prebiotics.

Stem cells are incredible because they can turn into many different types of cells and are used to help grow your baby's organs, while the friendly bacteria helps with establishing your baby's gut microbiota.

Breastmilk also contains distinct bioactive molecules that protect against infection and inflammation and helps your baby's immunity. Just incredible.

It's no wonder you'll want to save as much of your precious milk as possible and our Rose Liquid Gold Pump can help make sure you catch every last drop. It's every breastfeeding mama's BFF.
