Here is Tip 4 of our BOM Sewing Tip Series, Brought to you by our sponsor BERNINA Australia! 💖💖💖

Getting seams to align when sewing units and rows can be tricky. Especially when sewing points. Anni from Hatched and Patched says having your seams pressed in opposite directions is the key to nesting seams!

When you are sewing blocks, such a two, four or nine patches, that are made of rows within the block, you need to press the seams in each ‘row’ in opposite directions. When you sew the rows together to make the block, you place two rows right sides together – with the seams facing in different directions.

You then slide the meeting seams left to right with your forefinger and thumb, until you feel them butt together snuggly. Carefully place a pin at this meeting point, a 1/4in from the raw edges. Fit and pin each set of meeting seams. Sew the rows together. The technique is the same when you sew entire rows of blocks together at the assembly stage.

For Mastering Needleturn Applique our designer Anni from Hatched and Patched says to use a light box, or window, to trace the applique image from the Pattern Sheet directly onto your applique fabric using a wash-out pencil. Cut each image out adding a scant 1/4in seam allowance to all sides.

Pin (or glue) the fabric shapes to the background fabric. When stitching the fabric shapes in place, use a thread colour that blends with the applique piece. Use the point and edge of your needle, and finger press the allowance under at the drawn line. Slip stitch the piece in place.
