The Mopoke Festival is a new event launching this year with an all-new format: it runs for 24 hours – from 6pm Saturday 4 February until 6pm Sunday 5 February, Macquarie Street East – and embraces arts, culture and entertainment of the finest quality. It’s named after an Australian native animal, the mopoke owl (so-called because that’s the owl’s distinctive cry: “MOPOKE!”). It’s the perfect name for an overnight celebration of local cultural, arts and entertainment. Indeed, the mopoke owl is also an Indigenous Australian totem that signifies, among other things, new life. A new festival literally embracing the new day and a newly inaugurated ’24-hour’ cultural life. The festival includes a multitude of events and experiences. Heaps of them are free and heaps of them are ticketed. Some of the latter include: flower arranging workshops; bush tucker cooking demonstrations and workshops; fundamentals of leathercraft; pottery work; glow-in-the-dark painting; hand-made candles; sculpture; abstract UV art; and coil-weaving.
