STUDIO TROBEC and Russell Rodrigo are shortlisted for the design of the Bondi Memorial at Marks Park. It is to the victims (and their families & communities) of the gay hate crimes in Sydney that targeted gay men and trans women during the 70s, 80s and 90s. Our design pays respect to the striking landscape (we have kept it low to the ground yet made it a private and distinct place at the same time) and becomes a very significant place for reflection - both alone and in groups while looking out at the sea. The symbolism such as the whistles reference the grassroots campaigns initiated by the community during the time of the events (as they were not adequately protected by police). The memorial will glow softly at night, becoming an inviting and safe space - thanks to lighting designer Maren Kohlwage.
