Pictured here is a selection of new works on paper by Jack Lanagan Dunbar, which will be on display at Sydney Contemporary @sydneycontemporary from 7 September - 10 September 2023. These works were developed during the artists time at DESA, an artist founded residency program located in Ubud, Bali Indonesia. The build up of expressive marking references the etched and worked metal plates that have become a reoccurring motif throughout Dunbar‘s practice, while injecting more graphic elements referential to recent large scale paintings. Providing greater insight into her current exhibition, ’Choral Ode‘, Renée Estée speaks on the personal and shared complexities of loss, love, crafting her paintings into a type of message that signs out to someone. In this video the artist explains the idea of the Choral Ode in a Greek play, and how it functions as a group of individuals singing together - converging the beginning, middle and end into one cohesive choral structure, and how such is reflected in her paintings and the installation of the show. Presented in the gallery as part of ‘This Oyster Is Your World’ exhibition is a major installation by New York-based artist Tariku Shiferaw. Tariku Shiferaw’s geometric abstractions investigate cultural signifiers related to the Black diaspora and the loaded histories of everyday objects. Often producing vertical stacks of broad, symmetrical horizontal lines in spray paint and acrylic on canvas that resemble shipping pallets, grated windows, or prison bars. In this case the pallets are physical objects arranged together on a painted wall, building in a new sense of depth to Shiferaw‘s iconic imagery. Tariku Shiferaw, Change (J. Cole), 2022, wood, lacquer, wall paint, 269.2 x 355.6 cm / 106 x 140 inches. @abstractexit #tarikushiferaw #thisoysterisyourworld #comagallery

In this work, one of the largest paintings included in Zara June Williams‘ current solo exhibition at our Chippendale space, the artist has captured a certain balancing of the coloured blocks and their segmentation. The artist’s over-painting in building the layers underneath becomes clear at the edges of the canvas, framing the structure as a whole and allowing the viewer visual access to the process of creation. Zara June Williams, The fabric of us, 2023, acrylic on canvas, 183 x 152 cm / 72 x 59 7/8 inches. @zarajunewilliams #zarajunewilliams #weforgetweknow #comagallery

Providing greater insight into her current exhibition, Inviting Me To Me, Yirui Jia speaks on the complexities and nuances of this new body of paintings. In this video the artist discusses her relationship with objects and the meanings they hold, as well as detailing the erratic and layered stories that permeate the work. Inviting Me To Me acts as a vehicle for world-building and in turn forms of connection - between the characters themselves, as well as between the artist and the viewer. We would like to remind you of our upcoming solo presentation, titled ‘Desire’, by Sydney-based artist Kansas Smeaton, opening tonight Friday 25 November, 6-8pm in COMA Chippendale space. Recontextualising and appropriating Rococo portraiture to reclaim who can be the subjects of these portraits, and in turn the subjects of desire, Smeaton frames her subjects within the opulence, frivolity and the decorations of high society. Voluptuous fabrics, bows and drapery visually celebrate a sense of freedom and a life of unrestrained enjoyment, something Desire acknowledges its subjects already embody and proclaim their own. @kansas2.0 #kansassmeaton #desire #comagallery

Currently viewable in the gallery is a presentation of new artworks and a charcoal wall drawing by Mexico-born, Dusseldorf-based, artist Fabian Ramírez. During the public opening event the artist also conducted a performance in the space that touched on ideas of introspection and ritual, both major points of interest in the artist's broader practice and the work itself. In this video Ramírez touches on all of these ideas, events and happenings, while also discussing fascinations and interests that inform his creative process. #fabianramírez #aneyeturnedin #comagallery
