Storytime with Tash!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is our story of the week. Here are some fun activities to do too:
Activity 1:
A challenge:
Challenging children’s own limits are a great way to explore a child’s persistence, problem solving skills and resilience.
See how many links you can create; can you reach from one side of the room to the other to make a great big caterpillar??? Give it a go.
What you need:
- Sticky tape
- A marker
- A twig (for the antennas)
- Scissors (parent to help)
- Two different coloured pieces of paper to create your own caterpillar any colour you like cut into strips long ways.
Activity 2:
Exploring children’s sense of agency.
Story telling with props.
Engaging young children in retelling stories read to them by parents or teachers is a strategy that is often used to promote story-related comprehension and expressive vocabulary (e.g., Gambrell & Dromsky, 2000; Geva & Olson, 1983; Soundy, 1993). Re-telling stories encourages children to use their imagination, expand their ideas and create visual images as they transfer the plot of the story to new settings including different characters or new voices.
What to do:
1. Photocopy each page of the book if you have it at home and cut out the different characters and foods (the egg, the moon, the sun, the fruit, the food, the caterpillars, and the beautiful butterfly).
2. If you can laminate them, fantastic!! It is a great resource to have in the home where the children can revisit on their own. If a laminator is not in reach, don’t worry, cardboard will also do the trick. Stick the images on cardboard, cut them out and voila!!! Your very own props.
Have fun!
Thinkersinq had our very first Art Exhibition yesterday and it was an amazing experience. Our children shared with their families all their inspiration, creativity and artistic brilliance. It was a great way to show how beautiful process thinking in play can be! Thanks everyone for coming along and making it a super special day!
Just a snippet of the artwork on show at our Preschool Open Day Art Show today. Make sure you drop in between 10 and 2pm to 321 MONA Vale Road Terrey Hills to view what our learners have been doing and speak to the teachers about how creative and critical thinking through play with purpose can give your child the best start. See you soon!
