What an epic week at the Australian Barrel Horse Association National Finals! We’ve been flat out cheering everyone on, and I’ve officially lost my voice from it! 🎤💨 But it was worth every shout, seeing all those incredible runs and horses giving it their all.

Met some awesome new clients too, who are now set up to keep their horses in tip-top shape with Equissage. Knowing these horses are getting the best care makes all the long days worth it!

Why did I start on this journey with Equissage? It’s simple—her name is Indie. 💖

It’s INFUSION DAY and I’m sitting here reflecting on the NSW Futurity Show, and life in general I guess.

There are a few major takeaways:

1. 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡 𝙞𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙙, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 it and any horse sport is a great leveller. I love that about training & showing horses in any discipline. It teaches you so much about yourself. Discussing this with the incredible jockey, Glen Boss “Bossy”, on the weekend really got me thinking.

2. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙞𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙚. I definitely have had some moments in my past where the frustration of mistakes has been reflected in a poor reaction after the run. It means you are passionate, you care and you are a competitive person. However, this past year I have been able to flip this and I now tell myself, ‘my identity is more than the outcome of this event’. After the event I still go home with beautiful horses, a crew that gives me 100%, a family that loves me, a house that is a home and the ability to keep living this life and supporting and inspiring others to do the same.

3. 𝙏𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, whether you win or you come last, is a reflection of you, your personal brand and a mark of success. So is congratulating those who do win, and celebrating them in that moment.

4. 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙. Here’s cheers to those that hang around and help pack up at the end of an event, who are grateful for sponsors & cattle donors and take the time to show their gratitude to them, who appreciate the committee and those who put an event on, who help the people in the backyard by assisting in opening a gate, clearing a pen of cattle, or thank them for their hard work.

5. 𝘼𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙖 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙚. They put themselves in a position of authority and are often the scapegoat for people who want a reason to blame why something hasn’t worked out. It is so important that before you have an opinion, you seek to understand, not to judge. This can be as simple as asking someone who may have more knowledge, attend a judges clinic, or be an active committee member. It’s amazing how knowledge can create enlightenment.

6. 𝙍𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨. That’s ultimately why we do what we do. If you keep seeking to get to the outcome, a certain goal or achievement, what happens if we don’t get there or when we do achieve it? Is it the end of the journey? Do our days become empty? Fall in love with the process and every day gives you purpose and fulfillment.

7. 𝙂𝙚𝙩 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝘽𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙨. A great example of this is getting back on your 2year olds and breakers. They are the best levellers. They make you appreciate the time and training that has gone into your older, more seasoned horses. They also remind you of the incredible potential the future holds and the reward that comes with effort & commitment.

8. 𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨. If you take the time to soak everything in, you’ll find true meaning in what you do. At this recent event there was a little voice that constantly put things into perspective for me every day of the 9 days we competed. Each morning when this little boy came to the arena, he’d call ‘Daddy!’ Over and over again. Until his Daddy, a very accomplished professional trainer, would look up and wave. To this he would giggle with delight and be content for a few seconds until he started this cycle all over again. I looked forward to this little voice every single day. To him the outcome doesn’t matter. His Daddy is his world whether he wins or not. This is something that his daddy does. It’s not who his daddy is. Such a beautiful reminder of what is important in our life.

9. 𝙂𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙐𝙥. There were so many examples of people just ‘showing up’; to help a family member, to watch and learn, to cross that time line (some for the first time), and some despite poor health or illness. This takes courage and your bravery is not unnoticed.

10. 𝙇𝙚𝙩 𝙜𝙤 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙩. We are lucky enough to have many young families in our sport. To the mothers who prepare and train their horses or support their partners to do so, pack up small children, drive many hours and compete like a badass, you are doing way more than you realise. Let the ‘mum guilt’ go, as not only are you showing up for you, you are teaching your children that it is ok to chase your goals and showing them the hard work required to do so. And to the little girls wearing dresses, boots & flower headbands, and the little boys wearing jeans, boots, cowboy hats, chaps, playing in the sand, mud, riding bikes and sneaking off to swim in the puddles, catch tadpoles or yarn in the stands, this is living and I feel you are living the best childhood a kid could dream of. And I, like many others LOVE watching your daily adventures and feel privileged to see you grow up in this sport.
