Shining the spotlight on inspiring people who are studying vocational education, alongside another career. Tropical North Queensland's 2024 Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year, Terrence Casey-Douglas, is completing a Certificate III in Landscape Construction with support from his trainer and employer. Terrence is a proud Tagalaka and Kurtijar man who has developed his skills and worked as the second-in-charge of a major project in Gordonvale, all while playing for the Northern Pride in the Queensland Rugby League. Vocational education allows the opportunity to pursue different career paths at the same time. National Skills Week is a week to celebrate the opportunities VET provides, and to shine a spotlight on those leading the way. All Purpose Transport is a great example of how industry is changing the game within VET, creating game changing pathways and opportunities for apprentices and employees. One of Queensland’s largest privately-owned transport companies, All Purpose Transport, won 2023 Medium Employer of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards. In 2012 it launched a workforce development program, Project APT, with the aim that every employee would earn a qualification from TAFE Queensland. Now in its 11th year, 500 workers have earned a certificate III-level qualification or higher in their field of expertise. It's fantastic to see industry changing the lives of those around them. The opportunities the industry offers are endless, covering occupations such as carpenters, electricians, concreters, or event safety managers, just to list a few. 2023 Australian Training Awards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Finalist, Bradley Maynard is paving his own pathway in construction, using VET as his game changing tool for success. “The game changer for me is VET has given me that extra knowledge that I need to better my employment chances and it’s helped me take that next step through my career path.” Bradley is a Proud Palawa man, who has completed a number of VET certificates, including a Diploma of Leadership and Management. Bradley is now the Safety Manager at a structural steel fabrication and construction Shipyard in Hobart, where he oversees a team of around 300 people. “The theme this year is game changer, and that’s what it means. It’s a game changer for people’s lives to get the skills that we can teach them,” NSW Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Hon. Steve Whan MP states as he launched National Skills Week for NSW last Wednesday. National Skills Week Chair, Brian Wexham says “National Skills Week continues to be a catalyst for those seeking careers as tradespeople. It’s no longer a matter of recruiting people of the right gender, it’s about recruiting people with the right skills and there are numerous success stories demonstrating women have those skills.” Bridie Searle from Newcastle is one of those women. Before her traineeship, the NSW Trainee of the Year 2023, had never been on a ship. Today she manages million-dollar maritime projects with Thales Australia Limited in the Above Water Systems business. This was all achieved after securing a traineeship, where she began a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice. Komatsu Australia has launched a program which will help develop young talent and showcase the diverse range of opportunities available in the mining and construction sectors around the country. The program targets school and university students and recent school leavers and will include initiatives like promoting STEM directly through schools, technical workshops and seminars tailored to students and educators, work experience and placements throughout Komatsu and partnering with educational organisations. Zara Carey, Komatsu Australia’s General Manager for People Experience, says the program will help prepare the next generation of industry leaders with the skills they need for a future in heavy equipment or mining. It's fantastic to see the different ways we can celebrate vocational education! A great example is through WorldSkills Competitions. WorldSkills is Australia’s biggest vocational education and excellence competition, highlighting VET learnings and skills excellence during their showcase. Held every two years, with more than 500 regional competitions held in 34 regions across Australia. South Australia will host a number of regional competitions, including the Adelaide bakery competition on the 23rd of August, during National Skills Week. Students will compete against each other, demonstrating the baking skills, with a chance to compete at the international level.
