The Straydog wants to wish everyone a safe and merry Christmas this year!

Whilst wild weather kept us away from our last market (dont worry we kept our records dry and above the high water mark!) we just wanted to say thanks to all our awesome customers old and new for their support this year. Its awesome getting to know you all and always learning something new about music every week, the album recommendations are always killer!

While we take a short break over wet season we will keep hunting down top quality records for you, ensuring our variety continues to grow for next year!

Look forward to hopefully a couple more flea markets and some roadtrips to other markets all around QLD, as well of course as our regular stall at Cotters in 2024!

Michael Mcdonald - If thats what it takes (1982)
Breaking out solo from his previous bandThe Doobie Brothers, this album is fresh full of yacht rocky soul. "Love lies", "I keep forgetting" and "I can let go now" are all great tracks, solid album for fans of Hall and Oates, Boz Scaggs or Christopher Cross 👌

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality (1971)
Absolute masterpiece of an album. "Sweet Leaf", "After Forever" are instant classics, "children of the grave" is an anthem.

Ohio Players - Greatest Hits (1975)
These funk pioneers paved the way for so much. "Funky worm" is funk holy grail, "varee is love" slows it down to marvin gayesque level of seductive soul. "Pleasure" speeds it back up with some epic horn and trumpet work. For fans of Marvin Gaye and Rick James. A great compilation of their first few album

The Damned - Best Of (1981)
These guys are not as well known as the s*x pistols or the clash, but I reckon they are better than both of em. This compilation covers their early years, essential listening "New Rose", "Neat Neat Neat" and "Smash it up" share sides with "love song" and "I just cant be happy today". This band kept leading the charge for years, always ahead of the curve, dabbling in genres beyond simple punk rock.

The Gun Club - Fire of Love (1981)
Another band that while not as well known as their contemporaries (in this case US punk scene), their sound is way more interesting. "Shes like he**in to me", "Fire Spirit" and "S*x Beat" are all awesome tracks. Fans of the Cramps, the Birthday Party, Tarantino soundtracks and even Sonic Youth would dig these guys.

Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded
This epic released in 1987 and featured both samples and beats that became staples within hip hop, as well as street savvy lyrics and some intimidating album art for the time. "South bronx" is an anthem, "9mm goes bang" hits hard lyrically and with some epic drum machine usage, "the bridge is over" is a classic, who woulda thought billy joel could be tweaked to hip hop...

Naughty By Nature - Self Titled
I first heard tracks off this on Jarhead, "OPP" in a hilarious scene, as well as "pin the tail on the donkey" which was always a fav off the seminal soundtrack "Tony hawks pro skater 2". This album is upbeat, lyrically slick and grooves the whole way through.

2PAC - 2Pacalypse Now
One of the most lyrically powerful albums ever. Pac's storytelling is raw and unrelenting in his debut release. While other hip hop artists dissed the system or embraced the gangster persona, this one dives deep into the social issues of the day, making it unmatched in its era. Tracks that stoodout were "Trapped", "Brendas got a baby" and "Words of wisdom"

Ice Cube - Amerikkka's Most Wanted
Ice Cube first solo album is also one of his best. Heavily influenced by Public Enemy (who produced) gives it some of the best grooves and samples mixed with Cube's smart ass lyrics. Its at times funny, tongue in cheek, but still delivering the message. "Amerikkas most wanted" has a funky beat and one of the most uptempo song deliveries of the album. "A Gangstas Fairytale" has some hilarious samples, telling a bedtime story with a ghetto twist. "Endangered Species" features Chuck D and Cube both at their prime, again with a funky beat.

Geto Boys - Till Death Do Us Part
My favourite album on this list. Out of all the groups in hip hop, I reckon Geto Boys were the hardest and most anti establishment of their era. "Six feet deep" is a heartfelt dedication to the homies who didnt make it, "Crooked Officer" a point blank hit out at corrupt law enforcement, "murder after midnight" is the soundtrack to the drive-by.

Apologies for the delay, but here's some of Straydog's fav hair/glam metal albums!!!

Warrant - Cherry Pie
This album gets spun at least weekly, its that good. "Cherry pie" and "love in stereo" are upbeat tracks but for me "uncle toms cabin" is flawless masterpiece. Warrant's next album is also excellent, checkout "sometimes she cries", one of the best ballads of the 80s

Winger - Self Titled.
Winger takes hair metal to the next level. "Seventeen", "madalaine" and an excellent cover of "purple haze" are all awesome tracks from this great album.

Def Leppard - Hysteria
DL are the UK's biggest export to hair metal, and the kings of power ballads. "Pour some sugaron me", "love bites" and "animal" all rock, checkout their music videos to see all 80s glory mtv era hair at its finest.

Heaven - Knocking on heavens door
A local addition, and one I only recently discovered. Their cover of the dylan classic is one of the best. "Last laugh" also is a highlight of this little known album. Very Guns n Roses, before they exploded on the scene.

Cinderella - Long Cold Winter
This album is a great mix of blues/metal and power ballads. Southern rock vibes also blend it up into something epic in my opinion. "Gypsy road" is an anthem, "long cold winter" is a blues infused power ballad and "take me back finishes this album off strongly.

While hair metal is often lauded for being not true metal, its still some of the best music to throw on if you wanna have a good time and party. Let the purists cry and have nothin but a good time!
