Hands are weird! I enjoyed using the combo of acrylic and oil paint in this work - establishing the initial colour/form in acrylic and going over it in oils to enhance
It's week 10 already! π±

This is a painting I created during my studio course in 2022 and at the time, I felt pretty much ready to give up on it. However (much to my surprise!) at the end of the semester this piece was chosen for display at my art school over my other pieces which I thought were stronger.
What do you think about this piece? Does it catch your eye? Why or why not?
Acrylic and oil on canvas, 2022
The pear-fect colour study π€π

One of my first proper Alla Prima paintings. Such a huge challenge trying to create a finished painting in one sitting - safe to say I'm exhausted! π«
The end of the year is always an awesome time to take a bit of a break from painting after working hard on some challenging designs and concepts.
Here's a Christmas commission that I completed recently - the last painting of the year! This was a real treat and challenge for me, including adding a few extra details that weren't in the original reference image. A huge privilege to be trusted with such a beautiful gift βΊοΈπ
Now to enjoy some relaxing time off and get back into the swing of things in 2023 - happy holidays π
Second year folio set up is complete!!! Really proud of what I've achieved this semester - you can read more about it below π
(Unfortunately this set up is just for assessment and isn't an actual show but it gives a great idea of what these works might look like in an exhibition space)

Artist statement:
Incorporating elements of the uncanny into my work, I aim to investigate imagery that unsettles. My main interest is in self-portraiture and in exploring how this subject matter can be used as a powerful means of identity exploration and expression. By focusing on hair and incorporating elements of the uncanny and the grotesque into my painting, I hope to invoke in the viewer a feeling of a lack of control. Hair is representative of autonomic bodily processes over which we have no control. As well as this, it is tied to a feeling of repulsion when visualised in a context that we donβt regularly find it. This contrast between the beautiful and the grotesque, and the way in which hair can be symbolic of this, is a theme which I bring into my painting to heighten feelings of repulsion, attraction and intrigue.Β
My works are a mixture of acrylic and oil paintings, as well as ready-made sculpture, graphite drawings and digital prints. By using a range of mediums, I aim to explore different ways of representing my theme as well as exploring the most effective ways of translating my ideas to the viewer. I have incorporated actual hair into some of these works, to better investigate the properties of this as a medium.
Final canvas and painting for semester 2. This piece has been such a huge challenge! A bit sad I won't have more time to work on this because I feel like it was really starting to come together but I'm pleased with where it's currently at. Maybe it'll be a summer project - would love to add more texture and tonal variation to make this really shine (potentially re-doing it in oils as well!)

Current - my mega painting! 2m x 1.25m, this is proving to be a massive challenge but I'm happy with the progress so far. Now to work on finer details to properly bring it to life!
