From a circadian biology perspective, the body relies on an internal clock system that synchronizes its various functions with the environment.
This internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, helps regulate vital physiological processes—like sleep-wake cycles, hormone production, body temperature, and digestion—in a 24-hour cycle.
To "know" the time, the body relies on cues from the environment, particularly light, which is the primary "zeitgeber" or time-giver.
Specialized light-sensitive cells in the eyes (called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells or ipRGCs) send signals to the brain’s central clock, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) located in the hypothalamus.
The SCN interprets these light cues and orchestrates various clocks throughout the body’s tissues and organs, ensuring that they are aligned with the external day-night cycle.
This system enables the body to coordinate functions so that they occur at the most appropriate times, such as releasing melatonin to induce sleep in the evening, producing cortisol to wake up in the morning, and activating digestion when it’s optimal to eat.
Circadian synchronization supports overall health and resilience, while disruptions (like those caused by irregular light exposure or shift work) can lead to a range of metabolic, immune, and cognitive issues due to the misalignment of internal processes with external cues.
Quite simply, optimal health isn't all about the food that we're eating and the amount of exercise that we're doing.
TIMING, on the other hand, is everything.

HSW 126 - How To Form Self-Care Habits That Stick Do you struggle with willpower when it comes to implementing healthy habits into your life? If so, you're not alone! Putting healthy habits into practice on a consistent basis can be one of the biggest hurdles we face when trying to make changes and improve our health and well-being for the better.I...
You're Not Broken.
Your Environment Is.
The human body is extraordinarily resilient, however, you're doing something that goes completely against what it intuitively wants to do.
It cannot thrive in an environment that forces you to repeatedly disrupt your circadian clock.
Because our ENTIRE sense of health is guided by our daily rhythms.
So when we work in a windowless office or spend the most part of our day indoors two of our biggest circadian organs - the eyes and skin, do not receive appropriately-timed light signals that help to fire up the mechanics that drive internal cellular processes, such as mitochondrial function.
The result? Relentless fatigue and a lack of motivation to do anything.
So go easy on yourself.
Make sure you take time out for you -WITHOUT guilt.
Rest. Relax. Restore. Repeat.
Even better if you can do it outside in the fresh air, sunlight and grounded.
As in bare feet on the earth.
4 "shift work" essentials for every single person that works 24/7.
Audra x
I used to think sleep deprivation was the number 1 thing shift workers needed to focus on when working 24/7.
But that all changed when I started to go down the rabbit hole and research all things to do with circadian health.
Because desyncronisation, which refers to the disharmony of the body's inner circadian clocks or biorhythms, affects EVERY aspect of our being.
From our cells to our tissues to our organs, to our mood, to our reaction times, to our cravings for food, to our ability to think clearly and so much more.
And shift workers are the MOST VULNERABLE to experiencing this phenomena of desyncronisation - and on a regular basis!
To get a glimpse of what this is all about, tune in to our latest Healthy Shift Worker Podcast Episode 125 - 'Descynronisation - The Hidden Hazard for Shift Workers' where I share a few little nuggets of wisdom on this topic.
Or if you want to take it up a notch and go into more juicy depth and learn both the science and strategies to help you to manage your circadian health whilst working 24/7, then head on over to our new Healthy Shift Worker Skool Community.
For a small monthly fee, you'll get access to my brand spanking new course, The Circadian Lifestyle Program - Exclusively For Shift Workers.
It lays down the foundations for acquiring optimal health despite working 24/7.

Uncomfortable Truth 🌟 Hunger is a Sign of a Healthy Metabolism! 🌟
Many of us have been conditioned to view hunger as a negative experience.
It's also easy to fall into the trap of eating constantly, 24/7, when we work 24/7.
But what if I told you that hunger can actually be a powerful ally in your journey toward better health? 🥗
When we feel hunger, our bodies are signaling that it’s time to tap into stored energy, primarily fat.
This process is facilitated by a metabolic switch known as lipolysis, where the body breaks down fat stores for energy.
This not only helps with weight management but also supports vital bodily functions.
The science: When we go without food for a period, our insulin levels drop. This drop allows hormones like glucagon and epinephrine to rise, which promote fat breakdown and increase energy availability.
Embracing hunger can lead to improved metabolic flexibility, enhanced fat oxidation, and even better cognitive function AKA reduced brain 🧠 fog.
Especially during the biological night when our bodies are innately designed to rest and repair, as opposed to digest.
So, rather than fearing hunger, let’s view it as a natural part of our body's rhythm.
It’s a reminder that our bodies are designed to thrive on intermittent nourishment, making us more resilient and adaptable.
Let’s shift our mindset: hunger is not the enemy; it’s a sign of a functioning metabolism.
Embrace it, listen to your body, and unlock its potential! 💪✨

"When the student is ready, the teacher will appear."
Never has there been a more appropriate statement when it comes to my gratitude for meeting this human being over 10-years ago.
Daniel Roytas from - a former lecturer of mine that taught me to question EVERYTHING.
Especially when gut instincts and intuition kicks in, when something doesn't feel quite right.
Because if we can't question things (especially at academic level), it's very easy to become a well educated, but misinformed human being.
It was wonderful to catch up with Daniel as he presented his first face-to face talk in Brisbane since the publication of his book 📖 - 'Can You Catch A Cold?'
I was also fortunate to interview Daniel a few months ago on episode 120 of 'The Healthy Shift Worker' podcast, where he shares some of his insights from his book.
This included a big picture take on some of the global events over the last 4-years, along with his meticulous research of 200 studies that disproved viral and bacterial transmission between humans.
Incredible insights that certainly challenge the current status quo.
Episode 120 is currently ranking as one of our most downloaded podcast episodes to date, so if you haven't listened or watched it yet, make sure you set aside some time to do so!

Did you know that we’re designed to have bowel movements first thing in the morning?
This is because every function of our body is on a timer – including our digestion.
Mistimed exposure to artificial light (which happens when we work shift work), can, however upset digestion and gut motility leading to gut complaints like constipation.
This is because melatonin, a hormone involved in the regulation of the sleep/wake cycle that is designed to kick in during the biological night, is also involved in regulating gastrointestinal motility.
It’s timely release, plays a role in the stimulation and inhibition of movement of smooth muscle within the gut, helping to move undigested food debris from the small intestine and into the large intestine thereby assisting in the prevention of constipation.

New podcast episode just dropped!
Episode 122 - Sun Avoidance, Artificial Light and Skin Cancer with Zaid Dahhaj.
Our eyes and skin are our most important circadian organs as they help to control every aspect of our biology through the signalling of light (and darkness).
Given shift workers spend considerable amounts of time indoors and under artificial light, it's time to open our mind to the possibility that what we've been told around sun exposure and skin cancer isn't entirely true.
Available to listen or watch via the links below.

HSW 122 - Sun Avoidance, Artificial Light and Skin Cancer with Zaid Dahhaj Did you know studies have found no significant association between sunscreen use and reduced risk of skin cancer? Given the skin is an extremely important circadian organ that influences every aspect of our biology, have 'experts' got it wrong when it comes to sun exposure? In this conversation, Aud...
Sunlight on the skin helps to drive a healthy metabolism.
Morning light, in particular, helps to reset light-sensitive circadian clocks within the body, kickstarting the Krebs Cycle or citric acid cycle which is instrumental in driving metabolic health.
Staying indoors puts the handbrake on this process, and therefore your metabolism.
So when it comes to weight loss, it's not all about the food that you eat.
It actually starts with your environment, or more specifically your LIGHT environment.

It's landed!
Healthy Shift Worker podcast episode number 120 - 'Can You Catch A Cold? Untold History and Human Experiments' with Daniel Roytas.
In light of events over the last few years, this podcast has to be the MOST PROFOUND interview I've ever done.
As Daniel Roytas, a former University Lecturer, Nutritionist and Naturopath, challenges the long-held belief that colds and flus can be caught. He discusses the research and experiments that have been done to investigate the transmission of colds and flus, and how they have failed to convincingly demonstrate person-to-person contagion.
Other topics include:
- Alternative explanations for why people may get sick after being exposed to sick individuals include common environmental exposure, the power of belief, the nocebo effect, and social contagion.
- The belief in contagion and the fear of getting sick can have a powerful impact on our health and can manifest symptoms similar to those of a cold or flu.
- Differential diagnosis is important in considering alternative explanations for illnesses and avoiding misdiagnosis based solely on the assumption of contagion.
- The process of viral isolation and identification in virology is controversial and lacks proper scientific methodology and controls.
- How viruses were originally considered toxins or poisons, and why symptoms are the body's healing response to tissue damage.
- There is a lack of scientific evidence for contagious transmission of viruses.
- His newly published book contains over 1000 references highlighting some of the many gaps in scientific knowledge that we currently know today.
I encourage listeners to approach the information with an open mind given what we've just been through over the last few years, and to do their own research.
