Hi, I'm Matt Turvey and I'm a Fitness Coach. Let me help you reclaim your life through exercise! Let’s rewind to 2015.
Health & Wellbeing Officer - McHarry's Buslines
Geelong, Victoria, Australia. On the road to success: how Matt overcame barriers to study
“The hardest part is starting. Once you get that out of the way, you’ll find the rest of the journey much easier.” That’s author and motivational speaker Simon Sinek‘s quote, but it rings true for VFA fitness student Matt. He started the Diploma of Fitness earl
As you may've noticed (on my personal pages), I didn't post about the footy (Geelong Cats) last night. I got home yesterday, went for a nap, and woke up at 11 am this morning. I need to try and get a couple of extra hours sleep during the week, and get my surgery on my nose done to improve my quality of sleep (as well as make it possible to run again).
I plan for and analyse everything because of my health to help make improvements to my life. There are a lot of things I got right during my studies in 2022. However, with working five days a week, this isn't something I got to figure out in 2022.
This is another reason for one of my non-negotiables of my working career is no working on weekends. It's not about self greed or anything. It's about needing downtime to deload and work on things to get right for my Monday to Fridays.
You may not realise that Habit Training is part of a Personal Trainers skill set. Between my studying and life experience, I believe I can be of great assistance to any future clients. Feel free to DM or email me at [email protected] anytime to see how I can assist you.

Today is the greatest achievement in my life!
My first day of paid work in 12 years, 8 months, and 7 days. It's taken 9 years of hard work to get to this point, and to be honest, I don't think a lot of people believed in what I was doing until I started studying in 2022. I was screwed and going nowhere in 2015, I had 9 specialist doctors at that point. I was constantly thinking up ways of how to get out of that situation, and the only idea I could think of was to work on my fitness.
Now, I'm here in my very own office on my first day as the Health & Wellness Officer for McHarry's Buslines in Geelong.
Thank you so much to the people who did support me getting here. I couldn't have done it without your help. And thank you to the people who messaged me encouragement along the way. I'm so grateful.

This might look like just a piece of paper with instructions written by a GP to most. But for me, this was the written instruction for the very first action that turned my life around. From late 2014, when this was written, I've gone from fat, sick, & nearly dead to being on the verge of something very big.
It takes many actions to turn your life around, and learning a lot of new habits. It's not just exercise that got me to this point, but also eating, daily planning, and preparation. If you need help turning your life around & building habits, feel free to DM or email me at [email protected]
Last minute change of plans for today. Not at Premier Speedway, Warrnambool for the 360 Sprintcars. Getting things ready to take the van to Warrnambool tomorrow as per our original plans. I've been suffering serious fatigue issues since I had covid last year on top of Fibromyalgia, ADHD, ASD, & and breathing issues with my nose, which I'm having surgery on in the near future.. Going to the gym on a lot of days or travelling to the Speedway is the only thing I can mentally do for that day as I'm so mentally fatigued. I live off of ADHD meds and Musashi Energy drink in recent times. I have a positive outlook on things, and I'm confident that my gym program is gradually pulling me out of this situation. My body feels quite good... anyway, I'm just nicking to the bottle recycling place to get some extra holiday money. Let's go!
Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year to everyone. (This is my attempt at smiling).
2023 has been a trying year for myself, like many others. After the high of my fitness studies in 2022, things got derailed a bit, especially with long covid. But I haven't given up. I'm hoping to get things back into gear in early 2024.
The best thing I've done in 2023 is fully commit myself to the gym despite everything that's been thrown at me. The gym hasn't just helped me build strength but also helped build focus and resilience. The focus that I've built had been great for fighting off anxiety and concentrating on the things that matter most in life. The resilience has helped me be able to do day-to-day tasks on my worst days. Every day, I achieve something that helps move my life forward.
One focus that I'm currently concentrating on is my nutrition, as I'm hoping to drop a few kilos. This involves building habits, one at a time. Habit building is a big part of my job as a personal trainer. If you think you need help with habit building, as well as fitness training, feel free to email me at [email protected] or message the Fitness Savant Facebook or Instagram pages.
I'd just like to thank my Mum & Dad, Uncle Tom, Amanda, Georgia, my medical team, and my friends for all their support.
Wishing you all the best in health and happiness. Matt.

Today marks 10 years since my last alcoholic drink. I didn't have a problem with alcohol, but I've had sleeping issues for most of my life. Alcohol makes me happy and energetic, but it also makes me unable to sleep at night. So, it became the first sacrifice I made on the road to where I am now and where I want to be. It was originally meant to be a summer off the drink, but that summer is still going.
Picture taken at the gym a few weeks ago.
Today was my best push session ever!
PB for loads, reps, & completed every set. And I had the gym to myself.
This is an amazing accomplishment for me as this year I've had to battle long covid since I had covid back in May, which triggered fatigue issues, sleeping issues, and breathing issues on top of one I had already been suffering due to breathing issues from a broken nose.
Due to their not being many scientific answers for long covid symptoms, I figured back in early June that I wouldn't be able to do any cardio. I based this on what I knew from listening to other people I knew who suffered from it. So my plan of attack was to keep going to the gym and do resistance training, so no Matter what else I go through, I would still be physically strong and that would protect me from other health issues.
I went to the gym regularly and kept everything consistent. Most of the recent months, I haven't had any more energy and put everything else in my life on hold, including my career. Last month, I started walking when I felt I had more energy. The past month has been a challenge with the change of season and my fibromyalgia, and I've also suffered from tennis elbow, and tight hip flexors. The only consistent thing has been the gym. When everything else hasn't been going well, the gym has, and I'm now the strongest I've ever been. This has been big picture planning, and these results aren't an accident. I put the time in, I turned up even on some incredibly rough days, and now I'm in a position where I'm not far off being able to resume getting my business off the ground.

I've been off the radar recently and thought I better post an update. I was building up to a big mid-year when five weeks ago I was struck down by covid. Was out of action for two weeks before re-entering the gym, probably a week too early, forcing me to have another week off. I developed the symptoms of long covid. As their isn't much information on long covid, I've had to play it by feel in regards to getting back into exercise. Last week, I did three sessions in the gym and a few walks. I was struggling with my lungs, but they seem to be coming well now. This week, I'm doing the exact same amount of repetitions , keeping my body moving. I'm currently suffering from brain fog, sleeping issues, and anxiety, but I'm starting to feel good about the direction my health is taking.
If you've had health issues and are looking to get back into exercise, feel free to email me at [email protected] or DM me to see what I can do for you.
Feel free to visit my website at fitnesssavant.com.au.
Nights like this are why I exercise!
Exercise to me is preventative health. Without exercise, my physical and mental health brakes down. I get anxiety and brain fog from weakened mental resilience to my conditions. I get headaches and great physical pain from the effects of being outside in cooler conditions, including muscle spasms and pinched nerves. Every time I exercise I'm investing in myself so I can have moments like these.
Does this resonate with your life experience? If so, feel free to message me at [email protected] or via DM to see how I can help you.

On Saturday afternoon, I participated in the 10km Flying Brick Bellarine Sunset Run. I hadn't done any running in three months, so I went in with the mindset that I'll just do my best and have fun.
Went good for the first two km's until I got to the first hill at Indented Head. Found I couldn't breathe through my nose, so I started walking for a bit. From here on, I ran in intervals until I suffered from the breathing issue. I gave it a fair crack over the final three km's. I got 3/4 the way up the big hill at Portarlington before I had to have a short break again.
Overall, I was pretty happy as I was treating it as a fact-finding mission. The body held up well aside from the breathing issue. Hopefully, I can get that sorted in the near future. I'm looking forward to doing it again.

Why am I at The Flying Brick Cider Company?
Haven't run in three months due to studying, setting up my business, battling some health issues, and going on my first holiday in three years. Worked my legs out at the gym on Tuesday night, woke up this morning feeling good. So I thought, "Let's have a crack," and nominated for the Flying Brick Bellarine Sunset Run, my favourite 10km fun run being held tomorrow!
As I've run the course a lot as I live nearby, it doesn't hold any psychological issues for me. I know I can do it even without a preparation. I just won't be expecting a personal best time. My goal is to go out and have fun! Let's do it!

My key to returning to training is to start with light weight and concentrate on moving. This helps your body regain muscle memory for these movements, and helps prevent muscle strains.
