The X-Mid has landed!
This is the 1 person sil-poly version pitched at Fitzroy Camp in the Cobboboonee National Park. Very quick and easy to pitch with 2 walking poles and 4 pegs.
Well under a kilo in weight, plenty of room and easily shrugged off some heavy rain.

So many pockets!
Really love all the storage and other smart features on the Gossamer Gear Mariposa. No wonder they are such a popular UL pack.
(Yes it's comfortable too. Even overloaded with extra water, like it was on this trip in the Little Desert a few weeks ago)

Is it a tarp? Is it a tent? Yes!
New to the fleet is the Tarptent Rainshadow 3.
An ultralight, 3 person, single skin shelter that can button down like a tent or open up like a tarp, with a sewn-in bug net. All for less than 500g per person. Nuts!

Proving that you can be lightweight AND comfortable!
Who wouldn't want to sleep here?

08/04/2022

New at LFH - sleeping mats!
These are the Sea to Summit Ultralight Insulated kind. Seriously comfortable, and also comfortably under 500g for the full length mat (short version is closer to 400g).
Strike a really nice balance between performance and weight.
One of the most impressive features is actually the airstream pumpsack (stuffsack) - literally 3 or 4 sackfulls of air to fully inflate the mat. Very welcome after a long day on the trail!

TIP! Try custom printing your own outdoor maps on waterproof paper.
Tons of advantages:
🗺️
1) The exact map area you need, nothing more
2) Choose your scale
2) No map case needed
3) Waterproof and tearproof (really tough)
4) Save a ton of weight, especially if your route overlaps multiple full size maps
🗺️
This one is double-sided A3 and printed from maps exported out of - It weighs 31g!!
That means 10 sides of A3 size maps for only 150g which could easily be enough for a couple of weeks adventuring.
🗺️
If you can get hold of the paper, you can print them yourself
Or take the image files to your local print shop and get them to do it for you.

McMillan's Track Day 2 - there's a section in Licola North (just before you cross the Macalister River) where the track uses a farm driveway.⠀
As you can see, they are doing their best to tell you you shouldn't be there and make it difficult. At the top of the hill we had to climb over a locked gate - no big deal. We had already climbed over a gazillion fallen trees so it barely registered as a speedbump.⠀

14/12/2020

The art of camouflage....did you see it?⠀
We actually met the big brother a few hours later, blocking the path. We gave it space and waited for it to move. Took a while but when he realised we were there he flattened out his body and shot off into the bush. Any snake fanciers out there? Tiger?⠀
🐍⠀
One of the principles of ultralight hiking is to only take gear you definitely expect to use. The exception is a few important pieces of safety gear. One thing we took on our McMillan's Track hike (and thankfully didn't use) was a SMART Compression Bandage from for snake bite first aid. It's a clever piece of kit that takes the guesswork out of applying just the right amount of compression.

I'm going to rewind the clock and start posting a few shots from our McMillan's Walking Track hike a week or so ago.
Day 1 - how it all started: 5am in Woods Point, headtorches on.
Just as the first light of day started to appear.⠀

We bloody made it! What a trip!⠀
McMillan's Track, end-to-end from Woods Point to Omeo / Easterly (WOE). We got all the adventure we could have wanted and enough new campfire stories to keep us going for years to come! ⠀
☀️🌧️💨🌡️🏞️🐍🌫️⠀
Haven't worked out all the nitty gritty yet but total time was about 6days + 7.5hrs.⠀

19/11/2020

This Sunday I'll be setting off for an end-to-end walk of McMillan's Track, starting in Woods Point (apparently this is backwards).⠀
We'll be travelling light and are planning to cover a lot of ground. Other than some well-needed adventure after lockdown, we're also spicing things up and aiming to set an 'unsupported' . ⠀
⏱️⠀
The McMillan is a long distance walking track across the southern end of the VIC Alps. It runs from Omeo to Woods Point and covers around 210km with over 10k of vert. Typically people do it over 10-14 days - our target is 6 days or less. It won't be easy!⠀
🌿⠀
Whilst the dark history of the man McMillan himself is nothing to glorify, the route was his creation and takes his name. I acknowledge that the track winds through the country of the Gunai/Kurnai and Jaitmatang peoples.

Ring of steel gone! Now it's our turn - so where are we going Melbourne?
