Throwback Thursday...
Today's track was recorded in Melbourne at Hugh McDonald's studio. I had only just met Hugh via a common muso friend as I needed to record some songs for the upcoming WoodworX CD.
I was knocked out when I realised who he was - guitarist, singer, writer and producer for the Aussie band Redgum. Redgum were contemporaries of my first pro band (Bluetongue Bush Band) but we never met as they were based in Adelaide and we were in Sydney.
Anyhow, as well as recording the song, he plays the lead guitar. Sadly, Hugh died of cancer just over 7 years ago but I feel that it was great to work with him, both on the WoodworX album and later on the Heywood & Moore CD.

This song, Ned Kelly's Letter, was written by Lucy Gibson and originally performed by the Bluetongue Bush Band. It appears on the Ned Kelly Centenary EP along with tracks by Redgum and Bushwhackers.
When we were working on the Cluster of Nuts Band - which was the first LP production I was involved with - we recorded my rocking arrangement of track.

Another nice review of Fool's Gold...
"Fool's Gold is a fun track from Brian Heywood that features whirling guitar waves, dynamic percussion and a steady bass low end. Lyricism paints an immersive sonic landscape. A solid lead vocal performance. Plenty of push and pull to the energy/arrangement. Audibly well mixed and produced. Backing vocals sit with ease right behind the lead. Nice harmonies. Soaring melody lines and catchy sing along hooks. A solid track... I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. Keep it up!" - Music On The Moon

I received a great r***e from a really nice bloke who was one the bass players I worked with in England (we even did a gig in India!).

I hadn’t encountered ceilidh music before, and did so with his help.
I found his knowledge and awareness invaluable and this in turn helped me through my discovery."

This was one my favourite instrumental tracks. it was only performed in front of an audience as part of the of the 'Thinking about our lives' show at the Market Theatre in Hitchin (UK) in 1999.
The quality is not great as it was filmed on a static camera in low light levels.
Near the end of the track there is a great bass solo from Brian Jenking

Outta Here (PROD016 - POKE Records)
After four singles and an album release with Heywood & Moore and a successful collaboration with BBC Radio 1 John Peel’s favorite Pyschobilly band “The Pocket Gods” - Australian singer / songwriter Brian Heywood has found time in his busy schedule to release one of his original songs as a digital single on POKE Records.
The original track was recorded at producer Andy Neve’s studio in Oxfordshire and features Brian on lead vocals and all the guitar parts while producer Andy supplied backing vocals, keyboards and programmed the drums.
The song Outta Here was started on the flight back from the Womex world music conference in Seville and is an upbeat reflection on how people react to difficult situations. The world banking system had just melted down and many people were struggling to survive the blow. The “bar in Spain” mentioned in the third verse is a real place in the old town of Seville and is a traditional family run Tappas bar called El Ringconcillo with sides of smoked pork hanging on hooks from the barreled ceiling. The only information technology they use is a piece of chalk with which they keep a tab for each customer on the ancient oak bar.
The new single has been released worldwide in digital format by the Dunstable based POKE Records and can also be heard on Spotify as well as being available for purchase online from iTunes, AmazonMP3 and all other online digital distributors in digital format.
