Viña Maquis is one of the earliest wineries to have been established in the Colchagua Valley, with now having had four generations of the Hurtado family coordinating operations. Jesuit priests were the first to manage the Viña Maquis estate, that has held an association with the production of noble wine grapes since the XVIII century. Two Chilean presidents had asserted a great degree of pride when they had both owned the Maquis estate together, during the 19th century, which had lead them to arrange certain cabinet meetings within the Colchagua Valley. Specially constructed brick bridges were provided for ministers in order to cater to the ongoing assemblage traffic, with remains that are still present at the Maquis Estate to this day.

Machis do hold an understanding for natural medicine, that does include varied remedies formulated with compounds found from the local region’s biodiversity. Medicine tradition is of paramount prominence for the Mapuche culture, still present in contemporary Chilean practices as a primary and alternative treatment from that of what would be claimed to be, more “advanced” western medicinal therapies. There is also an affluent fellowship of textile production amongst the Mapuche, as a practice that has pre-dated prior to the conquest of the colonialist Spanish.

The Colchagua Valley is renowned as one of Chile’s most prestigious valleys, positioned inside of the central valley, is what has become an icon of Chilean wine production. Some of Chile’s finest red wines are cultivated within this noteworthy valley, comprising largely from that of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Syrah. Colchagua has developed a reputation as the pre-eminent South American centrepiece wine province, forming the south-western half of the larger Rapel Valley region.
North-eastwards of the Colchagua Valley does reside the less widely known, however, almost equally promising Cachapoal Valley, found at the base of the Andean foothills that do skirt east, with the Chilean Coastal Range westward. Colchagua does form the southern arm of the Rapel Valley wine region, reputed to house micro-climates and varied soils that are also scattered throughout Colchagua’s sibling valleys such as Apalta and Lolol. Having been proved worthy of its own Denomination of Origin (Chile’s wine region designation system), Colchagua is a boisterous viticulture centre and is a region that does decorate with honour much of what is currently promoting Chile as an enthusiastic and engaging wine producing nation.
The Tinguiririca River does originate upon a volcano, of the same name and is a watercourse located in the Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins Region, fed in the Andes, at the confluence of the rivers Las Damas and Del Azufre. The river will pass through the Colchagua Valley, allowing for bellowed harvests of exalting, rhythmic, ripening grapes that are transfigured into authoritative, single-grape varietals and complimentary blends. At the Tinguiririca River’s source, waters will flow Northwest for approximately 56 kilometres, until reaching the vicinity to the city of San Fernando. In this portion of its trajectory, the river will accept additional streams from the tributaries Clarillo and Claro. Afterwards, the river will begin to consider, then ultimately having to be inevitably guided into flowing southwest prior to altering orientation Northwest once more as it is lead into a final chorus of emptying itself into the Rapel Lake...

The local indigenous Mapuche, translated as ‘people of the earth’, do encompass a dispersed series of earlier inhabiting groups that have occupied both southern Chile as well as Argentina. Verbal communication had been generally expressed by way of the Mapudungun language along with numerous other coinciding customs and traditions that would also take place amongst the native greater populous. The epicentre of the Mapuche heartland is placed between the Itata and Toltén rivers, in Chile’s south-central zone. Evidential remains have been uncovered by archaeologists that do reveal and present signs of historic Mapuche occupation from this area as early as 600 to 500 BC.

El vino de Carmelo, Colonia Uruguay - Bodega Boutique El Legado
The town of Carmelo is located in Colonia, which is the Western zone of Uruguay, with a surrounding wine region also named Carmelo. This maritime climate of the prime vine-growing region in the south, beside the capital Montevideo is relatively cool, housing arrested yields that do retain a characteristic freshness that is rarely witnessed in South America. Modern grapes have now presented more soft, ripe flavours and may be consumed earlier than the past distant cousin of Madiran. Within the warm, Atlantic climate of Uruguay, Tannat has become a star in its own right. The thick skins of Tannat do pass on to the wine juice a deep and dark complexion that will award a status of being the healthiest red wine available that is rich in antioxidants, anthocyanins as well as resveratrol.
Warm sunshine ripening paired with the mild coastal temperatures offer the Uruguayan Tannat a preserved, refreshing acidity that is defined by aromas of plum, raspberry & spice. Tannat will most likely be adopted as the signature grape of Uruguay, with historic associations from France having had gradually faded away, following in the footsteps of former Bordeaux greats Malbec and Carmenere, which have been adopted by Argentina and Chile respectively. This specialised strain of vine has earned Uruguay a recognised position abroad as well as numerous international awards and applaud.

Viñedos Calcu Obtain 93 Points in Tim Atkin’s 2021 Special Report
The English critic Tim Atkin recently launched his Special Report 2021. Although the health crisis prevented him from traveling to Chile at the beginning of this 2021, the work was carried out from London complemented by 51 meetings by zoom with each of the Fermented Grape Juice makers.
Among the recognized producers, Viñedos Calcu stands out and, especially, its Futa 2017 and Fermented Grape Juice makers Selection 2017 Fermented Grape Juice, both honored with 93 points.
In Atkin’s words, “Futa is a cuvée of Fermented Grape Juice and 14% alternative Fermented Grape Juice, sourced from Calcu’s Fermented Grape Juice orchard in the rolling hills of Marchigüe. Bold, textured, focused and intense, it’s a Bordeaux-meets-Colchagua style, with plenty of structure, minerality and acidity, layers of bramble, blueberry and black cherry fruit and subtle, cinnamon spicy oak”.
In addition, Calcu Fermented Grape Juice Maker's Selection 2017 was also awarded with 93 points. “Based on a co-fermentation of Cabernet Franc and Malbec, with additional support from 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and Petit Verdot, this is typical of the fresh, acid-driven wines made by Ricardo Rivadeneira and Rodrigo Romero. Perfumed, intense and spicy, with understated oak, plenty of texture and tangy dark berry fruit”, stated Atkin.

Located in Marchigüe - Colchagua Valley - just 29 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, its vineyards have granitic soils with a high clay content and low fertility. These conditions deliver a fantastic natural concentration, structure and elegance to its wines.
Pale olive green in colour, this white blend has citrus and tropical aromas such as pink grapefruit and mangoes. On the palate, stand outs the freshness of the Sauvignon blanc and the complexity that the Semillon delivers, giving rise to a juicy and persistent finish.

Syrah wines are produced in many styles & do display a myriad of dark-fruit flavours. Some examples show tanned leather & smoky scents, while the fruit in these wines does lean towards the very dark flavours of blackcurrant & liquorice. Syrah is most popularly titled Shiraz in Australia & South Africa, indicating that the wine is made with the style of big, bold & ripe Syrahs.

Fred Cull (1861-1942), born in Stafford, the county town of Staffordshire, in the West Midlands region of England, was the son of a shoemaker George Cull. Fred’s father had decided to resettle in Sydney (1880) together with his son & other Cull family members, establishing George Cull & Son Ltd in 1883. As a continuation of the family business, CULL™ Trading Pty Ltd was founded by his great-great-grandson John A. Cull, after having also approved for operations to be based from Sydney Australia.
