Around 400 million years ago, during the Devonian period, Earth was home to giant fungi called Prototaxites, which are believed to have been among the tallest living organisms at the time. These massive, tree-like structures grew up to 8 meters (26 feet) tall and had trunks over a meter wide. They dominated the prehistoric landscape long before the age of tall trees and forests.Prototaxites' exact classification puzzled scientists for decades, as early researchers debated whether they were plants, algae, or fungi.

Today, most experts agree that they were giant fungi, a group of organisms distinct from plants and animals. These enormous fungi likely thrived in nutrient-poor environments, feeding on decaying organic matter and playing a key role in early ecosystems. Their existence highlights the strange and often extreme forms life took on in Earth's distant past.
