Tattoo ink has a long and varied history, reflecting the diverse cultures and practices that have embraced body art throughout human history. Evidence of tattooing dates back to prehistoric times with the oldest known tattooed human remains being those of Ötzi the Iceman, a mummy from around 3300 BCE found in the Ötztal Alps. 🗻🗻
Traditionally, tattoo inks were made from natural pigments. Soot, charcoal, and ash were common ingredients, mixed with water, plant sap, or other liquids.
The development of synthetic pigments in the early 20th century revolutionised tattoo ink. 💯💯 These pigments allowed for a wider range of colours and greater consistency in the quality of the ink. Modern tattoo inks typically consist of pigments suspended in a carrier solution such as water, alcohol, or glycerin.
