In the early 1660's architect, Antonio Contino designed what has come to be known as Ponte Dei Sospiri or, "The Bridge of Sighs". From the barred windows of the limestone bridge, story goes that its view onto the Venetian canals was the last sight a convict would see before passing over the bridge into their cells or in some cases, before taking their last breath. Although this story isn't quite historically accurate, we can see why Lord Byron coined the name. Venice always has and always will belong to the romantics, to all that is ornate and delicate, all that is wonderfully set in its way, and all that is full of life and irrevocably Venetian. To pass over its canals and take in its astounding beauty for the last time, is at the very least worth a thundering sigh.
