The Great Separation, a ground-breaking social insights documentary that follows Joey Fry on his journey to understand loneliness, connection and belonging, guided by experts, researchers and Social Health Australia's Patron, Hugh Mackay AO, has launched on SBS On Demand, Tuesday, October 10th. If you or anyone you know is experiencing loneliness, please get in touch with us at [email protected] to learn more about our community-based companioning program.
On behalf of Social Health Australia, a big Thank You! for attending ‘Kindness is not a Spectator Sport’. Hugh Mackay and Joe Sehee shared their wisdom of how kindness is innate, and inspired us to reclaim our deeply evolved ways to proffer kindness. Not only to those experiencing adversity, but also to those with ‘existential loneliness’ who struggle to find a meaningful future in increasingly turbulent times. We heard from Dr Tim Read, Greens Member for Brunswick, who introduced us to the splendid idea of ’Third Spaces’ which enable local communities and create opportunities for chance encounter. We learnt that Third Spaces create an environment which help prompt acts of kindness.
I’d like to thank Urban Coup at Nightingale Village for allowing us to use their common space and for the volunteer Urban Coupers who took it to hand to discretely grease the wheels to ensure a smooth and successful event. I was delighted to receive so many questions afterwards about co-housing. No surprise really, as Urban Coup is a powerful, living exemplar of how kindness flourishes in a cohesive community.
I hope you enjoyed the event as much as I did. We’d love it if you can make a donation to Social Health Australia at www.socialhealthaustralia.org.
Our loneliness epidemic and mental health crisis are not going away on their own. If you know of someone going through a difficult time who could benefit by social support, ask them if they’d be interested in connecting with a volunteer companion from Social Health. And for more information, we can always be reached at [email protected] or 0429993391.
Social Health Wins Two Innovation Grants
We’re excited to embark on our third volunteer companioning project! Thanks to $70,000 in funding from the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation and The Australian Centre for Social Innovation, Social Health is now training, placing and supporting a new group of community-based companions. This initiative is intended to help people impacted by social isolation, loneliness or severe emotional distress receive kindness, forge connections and build resilience. Stay tuned.
