An interesting post summarising how native grain research, particularly in rice, is going in Australia so far.
We definitely need to find more economical farming methods before we commercials native grain production, but these projects are helping us refine the process and get us one step closer!
Australian native rices (Oryza rufipogon and O meridionalis) are an abundant and widespread resource on floodplains across monsoonal northern Australia, where rural and remote communities are keen to expand economic opportunities. Native Australian rice has been harvested and consumed by Aboriginal people until historical times (Ashwin 1930; Fukiwarra 1985).
Studies of other enterprises (Gorman and Whitehead 2005) indicate that wild rice may have the potential to support new, small-scale, wild-harvest enterprises. Previous RIRDC-funded work on wild rice grain properties has indicated that the nutritional and cooking qualities of native rice collected from the wild are suitable as a food product (Wurm et al. 2012).
A Northern Territory study has been undertaken to build on the previous investigation of the food qualities of native rices, by undertaking a preliminary assessment of the market for a wild rice food product. In order to do this the project broaght together traditional owners and enterprise developers, researchers and potential product buyers.
Trials of growing native wild rice planting near Darwin in 2018 found it would be expected to fetch a premium price as a local product for tourists and gourmet restaurants, but researchers needed to grow the rice under cover when they found it to be ravaged by hungry magpie geese when growing it outside.
Known to be high in nitrogen and phosphorous, native rice has attracted growing interest from researchers, Indigenous businesses and restaurateurs who would like to see it commercialised. But growing it under cover pushed the cost up to about $120 per kilogram, so it might be a while before it makes it to supermarkets shelves.

Check out Damien Coulthard as he creates Wilytya. Wilytya, meaning Night in Adnyamathanha language, is a piece representing the landscape of the Flinders Ranges. Damien’s artwork represents his Country and the area in which he lives, with each dot meticulously placed to create a unique, undulating piece.
At Aggie we loved the feel of the piece and have worked with the team to have Wilytya printed on mugs to include in our hampers and on our online store. Now, with each of our new winter range, you can support Damien and other Indigenous artists in a whole new way.

Guess who one of our newest suppliers are?!?
Aggie Gifts has just started sourcing ethically made coffee from Indigenous owned business ! We are so stoked to partner with this incredible business and we can’t wait for you all to try their delicious Kickstarter blend of ground coffee.
Dhuwa coffee began when the Griffiths Bros Coffee Roasters partnered with Shawn Andrews and Adama Williams. Shawn Andrews is a descendant of the Mununjali people of Southeast Queensland and the Palawa people of Tasmania. Adam Williams is a Wiradjuri man who grew up on Dharug land and now resides in Quandamooka country (in Southeast Queensland). Whilst, Peter Patisteas and Chris Togias, from the Griffiths Bros Coffee Roasters side of the partnership, are Australian-born with migrant parents, and second-generation coffee roasters.
Between the passionate team at Dhuwa, they bring the oldest culture in the world to Australia’s oldest coffee roaster to deliver premium coffee to conscious consumers.
All their coffee beans have been ethically sourced from Brazil, India, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Ethiopia. Each bean is roasted and blended to create unique flavour profiles. For the blend Aggie has in stock, there are hints of caramel, plum and chocolate to make smooth brew every time.
