META Exhibition at Gallery Central
There is a considered selection process for the META Exhibition and Perth Modern School had five Visual Arts students selected and displayed - Year 12 students Tony Nguyen, Claire den Hollander, Ashlee Hemy, and Year 11 students Genevieve Kelly and Kat Wilson.
This annual exhibition, hosted by Central Institute of Technology, celebrates the creativity and talent of senior secondary school students in art and design. It aims to recognise and showcase the remarkable achievements and originality of these young artists in their studies.
Claire den Hollander was awarded a Certificate of Acknowledgement for her entry, a sensitive and reflective self-portrait, a painting on mirror titled Love.
Claire said:
"My artwork serves as my way of showing my past self the kindness I wasn’t able to give her in the moment, and to show my current self a sense of love and appreciation for the person she has grown into."

CONSTELLATIONS TEAM FROM MOD WIN FIRST PLACE FOR CORE VALUES AT THE ASIA PACIFIC OPEN ROBOTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 'Constellations' robotics team featuring Paul Hodges, Oceana Oakley, Danny Edwards, Malachi Knight, Alice Tanner and Maddy Maxwell representing Australia (and Mod) has achieved First Place for Core Values at the Asia Pacific Open Championships (APOC)!
The competition was held at Macquarie University over four days from 4-7 July.
The judges said that the team displayed extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit, knows they can accomplish more together than they could as individuals, and showed each other and other teams respect at all times.
APOC is an international, invitation-only 'First' robotics event with 53 teams from 26 different countries competing. The Constellations qualified for the event by winning the national level competition in November last year. The team couldn't have made it this far without the mentorship of Mod Alumni Anna Pederson, who has given so much of her time in supporting the team.
Congratulations to the team on this amazing result!
As part of the lead up to the Paris Olympic Games, the Amis 2024 program run by the Australian Olympic Committee linked Year 8 French classes at Perth Modern via Zoom with equivalent classes on Reunion Island with a view to building lasting cultural and language connections. Our students exchanged letters, school guides, and video interviews, and participated in a lively and informative video class, communicating with their new French friends in both French and English. The students learned a lot about life on Reunion, and we hope to take the opportunity for future interactions between our schools.
It was an amazing experience!
👍👍👍

COMMUNITY DAY FUNDRAISING HELPS CHARITY 'FOSTERING HOPE'
This week, the ladies from registered charity 'Fostering Hope' paid a visit to the school to thank staff and students for the amazing amount of funds raised on Charity Day.
A total of $14,872.13 was raised and donated, an incredible effort!
Fostering Hope Australia’s mission is to support children in “out-of-home” care (foster care and kinship care arrangements). They also support remote WA communities and other charities by:
- Gathering donated goods (clothing, toys, nappies, school bags and more) and providing them to children and families (at no cost)
- Organising child-focused Fostering Joy events for children in care, to promote joy and togetherness
- Providing new suitcases to children in care through our Fostering Journey program.
This amount of money will help a lot of children in out-of-home care. Well done to everybody involved!
UNYOUTH VOICE COMPETITION: MARY, RHEA AND MIA MAKE THE GRAND FINAL
UNYouth Voice is an annual program and is an exciting opportunity for students in Years 7 to 10 to broaden their knowledge of national and international affairs, while developing their presentation and public speaking skills in a unique forum. Students are required to give a prepared speech then respond to impromptu questions from a panel of judges. Congratulations to all the Perth Modern School students who participated this year.
Three students progressed to the Grand Final, held at the State Library: Mia Saranovic and Rhea Kewalram in Year 9 and Mary McCusker in Year 10. Mary McCusker was announced as winner of the Senior division with Rhea as runner-up. Mary (right in photo) and Rhea (left in photo) spoke about how we can improve access to medical services in rural communities.
Students and teachers on the Music Tour to New Zealand are having a ball! Today they visited the Hobbiton Movie Set where the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed.
BEN AND HEIDI INVITED TO THE 2024 GEOGRAPHY'S BIG WEEK OUT
Congratulations to Ben Bauer and Heidi Gstaettner in Year 11 who have both been invited to attend the 2024 Geography's Big Week Out, which is a week of stimulating, hands-on geography activities in Jindabyne and Canberra. Heidi and Ben were selected as a result of their high achievement in the Australian Geography Competition that was held recently.
Only 16 students from across Australia have been invited to attend, with the top four students from the week of activities being chosen to represent Australia at the International Geography Olympiad being held in Bangkok, Thailand in 2025.

Top Mod Violinist and Composer Ellie Malonzo travels the world performing music! 🎻
As Ellie reports, "I have been very fortunate to have several opportunities to perform as a soloist this semester.
In February, I performed Wieniawski’s Polonaise in A Major at Government Ballroom and the Bach Double Concerto alongside world-renowned Ronald Thomas OAM (winner of the Carl Flesch Violin Competition) with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the MetSO Chamber Orchestra.
I was very lucky to be invited to Sydney to premiere one of my own compositions as a soloist with the Mosman Symphony Orchestra in March.
In May, I was invited to perform Dvorak’s Romance with the Wiener Stadtorchester (Vienna City Orchestra) in Austria – we also managed to go to Prague, to see the home of Dvorak which was an amazing experience.
In June, I performed the Debussy Violin Sonata with fantastic pianist Mark Coughlan, and look forward to performing it again, along with the Wieniawski Violin Concerto in Dunsborough in July.
Also in July, I will be attending the Australian Chamber Orchestra Academy in Melbourne, as one of 15 violinists from around Australia, led by Aiko Goto, which I am really looking forward to.
In August, I am excited to perform the Barber Violin Concerto and Arvo Part’s ‘Fratres’ with Mark Coughlan.
I will be performing again as a soloist with the Fremantle Chamber Orchestra in October, in the premiere of another of my concerti for violin and viola (which I will be playing with my teacher Paul Wright), and also in Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto. Additionally, this concert will be the premiere of my fugue for three violins
I also look forward to performing Paganini’s (slightly infamous!) Caprice No. 4 in the Paganini Relay in October.
In December, I will be participating in masterclasses for violin professors in Germany, where I will be performing Bach’s Fugue in G Minor and Paganini’s 4th Caprice. I will also be in the Tagiev Chamber Orchestra’s German tour in Germany, playing in Berlin and Schwerin.
Looking ahead to 2025, I am currently arranging a concert which will be recital of some of my compositions. I am currently composing the main work of the program, which I aspire to use to bring different demographics of musicians together to involve a wider community in Western Australia’s classical music scene. I look forward to working with organist Alessandro Pittorino in this exciting project."
