I just spent a wonderful week in Adelaide undertaking a residency at the JamFactory with support also from Art Gallery of South Australia. It was so great to meet with and have mentoring sessions with some of the talented artists at Jam Factory and to visit the students at TAFE. I also really enjoyed talking to the guides at AGSA about my work as well as an in-conversation with Rusty. Thank you so much to Stephanie James Matten and the team at Jam and Rusty Kelty from AGSA for all of your support!✌️

This piece, Cloud across the sea VIII (2022), recently featured in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia Australia curated by the incredible Rusty Kelty. It was a very meaningful exhibition to me, and to be included alongside the work of so many iconic Japanese ceramic artists was a real honour. Thank you Rusty and AGSA! "Pure form: Japanese sculptural ceramics is a major exhibition that presents the complex narrative of Japanese ceramics which took place in the aftermath of the Second World War and its continuing resonance with contemporary practitioners. The revolution in clay which liberated future generations of ceramicists also gave rise to the first generation of female practitioners who injected a vital new energy and perspective into the ceramics culture of Japan." I'm happy to share that a selection of my new works called ‘Clouds across the ocean’ are showing at Beaver Galleries from today, alongside my talented colleagues Julie Bartholomew Somchai Charoen and Alterfact I hope you can get along to see the show if you’re in Canberra!

'Clouds across the ocean'
In the early morning it was still
Not just the air but the sea too
The gentle before-sunrise light made a subtle yellow, pink-blue sky
Looking out across the ocean
Clouds were floating between me and the other land beyond, busy talking to each other
I guess they were chatting about life out there?
No sooner had I thought it, when one of the clouds peered down at me, but said nothing
And went back to its conversation
So I just kept walking.

'Sodeisha: Connected to Australia' at Newcastle Art Gallery closes this weekend. I was honoured to be part of this special exhibition representing the Australian selection of artists...but of course I also felt so closely connected to the Japanese artists too. One of the exhibiting artists from the Sodeisha side was my university teacher's wife - it was so nice to 'meet' her work in Australia! This is one of my pieces in the exhibition that I hadn't seen in ten years since it joined the Newcastle Collection - it was nice to 'meet' that little one again too!

What a wonderful week I had in Hobart! I'm still trying to process all the new information and inspiration as well as the history, the beautiful nature and the patterns I noticed around Hobart...but most of all, I caught up with some great friends, and made some lovely new ones. Thank you so much to the The Australian Ceramics Triennale for involving me in the program and congratulations on a fantastic conference! I didn't want to come home!!

The Sodeisha movement in Japan had a big influence on my practice and my connection with clay – both functional and non-functional. The literal translation of Sodeisha to me is:
So – hashiru/run
Dei – doro/mud
Sha – group

Running through mud! The artists behind this sculptural clay movement, which was established in 1946, often had a traditional ceramics background but were also trying to push the boundaries of the Japanese ceramic scene. The attitudes that drove this movement have stayed with me throughout my career – and even now keep me going and inspire me to try something new.

I’m really looking forward to being part of this exhibition at Newcastle Art Gallery opening on 2 March, ‘Sodeisha: connected to Australia’. https://www.nag.org.au/Exhibitions/Future/SODEISHA-connected-to-Australia
