Sad times as iconic Tunarama Festival ends after 60 years
Joint Media Release with City of Port Lincoln Council and Port Lincoln Tunarama Incorporated.
This year marked the 60th Tunarama Festival and what will now be the last event in that specific format.
The Port Lincoln Tunarama Incorporated committee sadly announced on Tuesday night, that after 60 successful Tunarama Festivals, the event won’t be held in 2024 and that the committee itself will commence winding up.
“We are immensely proud as a committee of the work of past and present members, volunteers, quest ambassadors and supporters to create and uphold a tradition known as the Tunarama Festival for our community for over 60 years, however after several years of COVID and other factors, it is time for the event as we know it to end,” said Tunarama President Sharon Humenick.
“The festival has been supported by many local businesses over the years, including major partners Bendigo Community Bank, the City of Port Lincoln and the South Australian Tourism Commission, however times are changing and there is opportunity for a fresh look at the event and how it could be run in the future,” said Ms Humenick.
“I would also like to publicly thank the current Tunarama committee for their commitment and dedication over the past few months under difficult circumstances,” said Ms Humenick.
Mayor Diana Mislov added “the event is synonymous with Port Lincoln and over the years celebrated the city’s fishing industry heritage starting with the ‘blessing of the fleet’. There are not too many people that think of Port Lincoln and do not think ‘Tunarama’ or ‘Tuna Toss’ – it is known far and wide, and as far as iconic South Australia events go, Tunarama is up there on the list,” said Mayor Mislov.
Mayor Mislov said “Generations of locals and visitors alike have enjoyed all that the festival has offered over the past 60 years, and while sad that it won’t continue in the current format, there is a long-lasting legacy that will remain with the community and while we don’t have exact numbers, the event has over that time attracted several hundred thousand visitors to the region and contributed significantly to our January economy.”
City of Port Lincoln CEO Matthew Morgan advised Council has been working with the Tunarama Committee in recent weeks, once advised that they planned to wind up, to ensure that Council could step in and play the role of custodian for the community when it came to iconic elements of the event, such as the Tuna Toss.
“As part of the discussion, Council have agreed to acquire and retain in community ownership the trademarks, branding and intellectual property for the Tunarama Festival, including the custom-made equipment and tuna that are used in the famous tuna toss event,” said Mr Morgan.
“We know there is a strong connection to the event, we know there will be questions about the future, but at this stage, we just want to safeguard the essence of the event, and at some stage in the future, we’re sure that there will be a discussion about how this makes a resurgence.”
Mayor Mislov advised that “in due course, we’ll work out how best to celebrate and remember the 60 years that was Tunarama and acknowledge the efforts of all involved, however in the short term, Council is happy that we have ensured that when the time is right, key elements of the Tunarama Festival will be brought back to life for our community, but that it is unlikely that this will be in 2024 at this stage.”
We thank everyone who has supported the festival in any way. Lifelong memories have been made over the 60 years and they will be cherished for years to come.
