Type 2 Diabetes is a growing problem globally. This is my cheat-sheet for prompts when considering who to screen and what interventions are best discussed with the patient.

There's a lot to add, and the most important thing to do is get the patient to a diabetes educator for the low-down.

For now it is worth highlighting that there is an important clarification to be made as early as possible.

I have often been faced with a patient who seems unconcerned with their diagnosis (even years down the track) because they mistakenly believe that Type 1 diabetes is when the patient requires insulin, and Type 2 is when the patient doesn't require insulin.

I have had to gently advise that this is not the distinction to be made; and that if T2DM is poorly controlled, insulin treatment is a progression of therapy for T2DM. When I have explained this, I can see the realisation the patient is having - Regardless of whether your body is not producing insulin, or is not responding to it (insulin resistance), they face the same severe risks.

prn - Diabetes Screening is recommended every 3 years. (The AUSDrisk assessment can be triggered every 3 years from 40-49yrs of age)

While this information can relate to PIP quality performance indicators, it is not income-generating which lowers the priority of these actions at times...

It affected the way some employers interpreted way they paid casual nurses for shifts worked. It could be worth reviewing your pay slips and asking for advice if affected.

Were you a casual practice nurse before December 2020 who worked shifts? The next question is 'were you paid in accordance with the national industrial award - The Nursing Award 2010 [MA000034]?' You may not have...
