Helping Jay change schools project :

Born into the Wiradjuri tribe, Jay was diagnosed with severe Autism spectrum at the age of 3. With his amazing mum raising him solo until the age of 7, they have a bond like no other and she would do anything to see him thrive.

Jay was offered a scholarship at his current high school where he has been for the last 18 months. The school is very large and Jay has become more and more withdrawn and unhappy and feels lost and overwhelmed every single day.

Jay has had a best friend since Grade 2 and his mum and I joke that they are like little old men as they are sweet and gentle and not your average rough-and-tumble 14-year-olds. They are thoughtful and considerate and always kind which doesn’t always play in their favour when it comes to bullies.

Jay’s best mate is going to be changing schools after witnessing a traumatic event and no longer feeling safe and unfortunately, Jay’s scholarship cannot be transferred across to the new school.

The boys want to stay together as they are each other’s support network, they have the same quirky sense of humour and they genuinely care about each other’s wellbeing. It's a beautiful friendship that you don't see often.

We are trying to help Jay change from a school with over 1600 students to a school with only 250 secondary students and stay with his best mate. On his tour a few weeks ago, Jay was shy and withdrawn at the beginning of the tour and by the end of it, he was making jokes, chatting and smiling from ear to ear.

Six hours, five days a week is a lot of time at school when you are living in overwhelm and this contributes negatively to his emotional wellness.

Every kid deserves the chance to attend a school where they feel safe, supported and seen and we’d love nothing more than to see this for Jay.

He has created greeting cards which have been printed in Melbourne on 100% recycled card. Each set has 4 cards as pictured.

Yesterday I was at the kids school to watch a play and there was a little girl sobbing as she was about to enter the stage. She was standing right next to me as they were entering from the back of the hall. She stood silently sobbing and wiping her own tears and I made eye contact with her and mouthed the words “are you ok?” She looked back and nodded but her little eyes made my heart break. I just wanted to swoop her up and give her a big hug. When I picked the kids up from school I asked my little girl who she was and was she ok. My little girl said ‘she cries all the time Mum’. She’s always really scared’

It’s an awful feeling to be a scared child especially when you don’t yet have the tools to articulate what it is that’s causing you to feel this way.

I couldn’t get this little love out of my mind and I thought just imagine if WE could make a resource available so that all children can identify, articulate, communicate and accept their emotions in a safe space and without judgement.

Imagine if WE as a collective could arm little ones with something that would nurture their authenticity and allow them to make friends with all emotions - even the icky ones.

I don’t know about you but I’d love to see our future generations welcome all emotions, embrace them, love them and use them to create a strong, resilient and beautiful world!
