On Friday last week we were extremely fortunate to have Dylan from Walhallow Public School join us for the day. He shared a childhood story told to him to our next generation 'Tiddalick - the frog who caused a flood'. We then created our own personalised artworks using Aboriginal imagery. Thank you Dylan for sharing your culture.

Are you missing warm uniform items of clothing at home? We have a pile a mile high of jumpers, cardigans, soft fleece etc which need to go home. Please call into school and collect items to go home (as no one seems to own them here?!) and most importantly ... PLEASE LABEL THEM CLEARLY WITH YOUR CHILDS NAME. Items remaining without school logo will be donated. Items with school logo will be kept in our clothing pool.

Thursdays are for Breakfast Club. Great start to the morning out of the cold. Students enjoyed each others company and discussed favourite breakfast options. Our chickens provided fresh eggs which were whipped up into scramble eggs. They also get the spoils with the scraps. Thanks girls! 🐥🐥

Our students enjoyed the ‘best day ever’ last Friday in the company of award winning author and Illustrator Sami Bayly. Sami delivered a workshop on developing a creative mind using nonsensical ideas and notions. It was wild and engaging, the students hung onto her every word. An opportunity to create their own ‘mash up’ and present this to the other students was a highlight. It was a treat to catch up with our friends from Mullaley and Curlewis Public Schools. Thank you to G S Kidd Memorial School for hosting and The Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society Inc for the opportunity. Lunch and a play in the park was a lovely end to our morning.

On the 22nd May our students participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime and enjoyed the book ‘Bowerbird Blues’ written and illustrated by Aura Parker. The class discussed their observations and spoke about the many powerful messages that were shared in the book. The hunt then began to collect as many blue objects they could within the school grounds to create their own bower. This was constructed in the classroom and made for a fun afternoon. The Bowerbird Blues theme continued the following day where the students constructed a bower with resources collected from our forest area and recycled cardboard. The ‘avenue’ was littered with a collection of blue bits and bobs collected around the school. If you are in the area it is still on display in the playground to view and makes for easy pickings for our resident magpies. NSW Department of Education

Phew! Bring on next year!

An excerpt taken from Australian Library and Information Association

‘Bowerbird Blues stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for (you guessed it) BLUE! It’s a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower – a mix of natural and unnatural objects – attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.

Upon learning that her book had been selected as this year’s NSS story, author Aura Parker said “National Simultaneous Storytime brings us together and makes us smile, and the shared experience can send imaginations soaring to new heights. I am surprised and blown away with excitement that ‘Bowerbird Blues’ has been chosen as the book for 2024!”

The book was selected by an expert panel formed of members of ALIA’s Children’s and Youth Services group. Panellist and convenor of ALIA’s Children and Youth Services Group, Nicola McGeown, said, “Bowerbird Blues is an outstanding and visually appealing picture book. We all agreed that it was beautiful to read and would be a wonderful book to share across a wide range of age groups’.

Drum roll please … we are thrilled for Izzy L who has been selected as a finalist in the 2024 University of New England School Aquisitive Art Prize. Izzy is amongst a group of 60 students selected from 553 entries from 46 schools. The selection committee commented that there was wonderful expression of creativity and diverse styles represented which made the selection process very difficult, given the high standard across all entries.

The finalists will be judged by a local artist and the Director of NERAM, Rachael Parsons, will also present a Director's Choice Award. A People’s Choice Award will be voted for over the duration of the exhibition via the online exhibition page and the winner announced at the conclusion.

The opening of the 2024 UNESAP Let’s Hang It! exhibition will be held at 6pm on Friday 26 July 2024 at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) in Armidale and the exhibition will be on display until Sunday 11 August 2024.
