How good is this? Changing food changes disease processes and progression!!
Diet-induced resolution of diabetes-related macular oedema.
Rather than injecting an antibody into this patientās eye to attempt to reverse the swelling involving the central vision area of her retina due to type 2 diabetes, I decided to give diet a go first.
With the expert assistance of Adelaide Keto Nutritionist Rachelle Martin, our mutual patient rapidly put her diabetes into remission using therapeutic carbohydrate reduction. Over the next nine months, the swelling gradually resolved with complete recovery of her sight.
This powerful example of using real food as medicine to reverse the most feared complication of diabetes is the first ever published study of its kind.

With diabetes now the leading cause of blindness among working age adults in Australia, surely every patient with type 2 diabetes needs to be made aware of the extraordinary opportunity for remissionā¦?
Well done Lewis Hains for your excellent paper!
New podcast alert! Brought to you by the amazing The Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre's Benjamin, Adam and Carly who all live with type 1 diabetes. They will be sharing their perspectives on all things type 1.
I can't think of a better place to learn more about what it's really like to live with T1 and get some tips on making things a little easier.
LIFE IN BETA - BECAUSE EVERY DAY WITH TYPE 1 IS A SCIENCE EXPERIMENT!
Launch day is finally here! This podcast has been in the works for over a year and to finally release it is... huge! š„¹
With this podcast, we want to bring you the lived reality of type 1 - the challenging, amusing and absurd moments that only you will understand. We hope that it will keep you energised to manage this challenging condition, day-in and day-out, alongside the life you want to live.
Benjamin and Carly are my co-conspirators on the show. Can you guess which one of us is the orange one in the show artwork? š
In this first episode, we talk about the rumours of Levemir being cancelled, having to eat manky old hypo treatments that have been sitting in the car for too long, the new timeline on Freestyle Libre 3, and Carly's healthier option for hypo treatments (she didn't convince me, but maybe it'll be a game-changer for you).
You can listen to Life in Beta in all the usual places. Here are the links for the two big ones, but you can also search "life in beta type 1" on any platform and you should find it. Have a listen and tell us what you think in the comments.

June is bowel cancer awareness month.
Bowel cancer is the 2nd most deadly cancer and 10.7% of all new bowel cancer cases occur in people under the age of 50. 1,680 young people hear those four words āyou have bowel cancerā each year and sadly 290 young lives are cut short due to the disease annually.
My brother was one those young lives. He died at age 39 nearly six years ago.
He was the reason I started riding annually for the MACA Cancer 200. It gives me a chance to raise money for cancer research to make all cancers non lethal.
If youād like to support me to support them, the donation link is here. Donāt forget that all donations over $2 are tax deductible too.

We're just a week away from our very first Building Awareness of Eating Disorders and T1D workshop and about to close registrations for this vital event.
We know it's a fear that sits deep in the belly of many parents of children and teens living with type 1. We know that day-to-day life with type 1 sometimes feels like you are at war with food and blood sugar. Don't leave those fears to gnaw away at you.
Come to our workshop led by one of the few diabetes educators with a special interest in Eating Disorders, Mental Health and Type 1 Diabetes, the amazing Newton, Dietitian, Registered Nurse, Diabetes Educator.
Together, let's shine a light on this challenging topic.

In this opinion piece in today's West Australian, I shared some of my thoughts on what I'd like to see change in the next iteration of the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. What do you think? Do you follow the current guidelines? Do they work for you? What would you like to see change?
Is eating advice causing diabetes rates to soar? For more than half a century weāve been told that when it comes to food, fat is the devil.
If you donāt know what the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes is, and just how hard it can be to live with type 1ā¦. Then read on!

An important info session coming up. Come along and find out more!
At the Family Centre, we're here to support a life well lived with type 1. And that means tackling some tough subjects. Subjects we might not like to think about, subjects our support people might not like to talk about. But they're real, they impact us and we deserve to talk about them, share our stories, and get the support we need.
That's why we're bringing you an important workshop - Building Awareness of Eating Disorders and T1D.
5 June at the Family Centre, 6-8pm
Brought to you by our very own Beck Newton, Dietitian, Registered Nurse, Diabetes Educator, this workshop will unpack this delicate topic, with a focus on early intervention, early detection and how to seek help when you, your child or someone you love is experiencing an eating disorder.
As we will be discussing some sensitive and possibly triggering and/or confronting topics around eating disorders, mental health and diabetes, this presentation is for over 18s only.
Spaces are limited; get your RSVP in today: https://www.type1familycentre.org.au/event-details/building-awareness-of-eating-disorders-and-t1d
Any diabetes educators out there, whoād like to come to camp with us? Great way to get some extra skills in type 1 diabetes.
Want to come camping.....well not actual camping.....beds and showers included!
Every year, the The Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre and I take 25 teenagers with type 1 away on camp. These are transformative experiences that build their self-esteem, confidence, and skills in managing type 1 - without imposing limits on what they can do and achieve in life.
We're in need of a couple of DEs to join us for three nights in September. Your main responsibilities would be:
- Keep the kids safe during the day by helping them check CGMs, consider dose/pump adjustments around exercise, recognise and treat hypos,
- Assist with another DE in overnight BG checks and help the teens to treat accordingly,
- Get involved in all the fun activities!
I am the camp lead CDE, on call 24/7, so you will never be without support.
Think of all the CPD!!
The camp runs from Tuesday 24 September to Friday 27 September, 2024. It will be held at Forest Edge in Waroona. If you are available and would like to be a part of our awesome team, then please send an email to [email protected] by Fri 17 May.
Unfortunately, the amazingly helpful CGM tech can have some not-so-pleasant side effects for some people.
I stumbled across this article from the website which may be super helpful to keep your skin in tip-top condition.

This is 2 big scoops of Greek yoghurt (I like the consistency of Jalna), a handful of fresh or frozen berries (raspberries are my fave!!) and a small handful of grain free granola (packed with nuts, seeds and coconut). This is not a sponsored post.
I know today is all about Anzac biscuits, but I wanted to share these yummy low carb cake mixes available from Simply Swap Foods. They were quick and easy to whip up and were moist and super tasty. I especially love the fact they have minimal ingredients.

The 2024 theme for Dietitians Week is Nourishing Mind, Body, and Brain.
This theme is at the heart of my practice.
I know that the food we eat or donāt eat has a powerful impact on our brain and our mental health. When we eat the energy and variety of nutrients our body and brain need, we tend to think better about ourselves, have better concentration and our mood generally improves.
But when we donāt get the energy and nutrients we need, we might be more susceptible to low mood, increased anxiety, difficulty concentrating and feeling sluggish.
The longer that our mood is low, or our mental health is struggling, the more common it is that our food intake and food quality changes.
When we feel crap, we might choose to eat convenience foods, or those highly palatable foods that might make us feel good for a little while. Sometimes we end up eating more than we planned but sometimes we donāt eat at all. If we havenāt got the energy or motivation to even get out of bed when our mood is so low ā how can we organise a balanced meal for ourselves?
When we get depression or anxiety, it might be appropriate to get some medications and see a psychologist to talk through our concerns. This is all great, but sometimes we donāt think about the basics of fuelling our brain and body to help our mental health.
I know itās hard and I know it feels overwhelming, but putting some thought and extra effort into the foods we eat might boost our brain function and mental health enough to start feeling like we used to. Give it a go for a few weeks and see if it helps. You might be surprised.
Eat enough across your day to get the energy your body and brain needs and eat in a way that brings in awesome nutrients to help your body and brain to work at its optimum.
Below are my top tips to get you started but reach out if you need more help with your food intake to boost your mental health.
If you need more urgent support ā contact one of the helplines available at https://www.mhc.wa.gov.au/getting-help/helplines/
I haven't had a chance to post til now, but this was such great news this week.
Finally, our peak body for diabetes in Australia has endorsed a lower carbohydrate eating approach - providing hope to people living with type 2 diabetes.
This has been such a long time coming and will mean that people seeking to improve their blood glucose levels and general health should now be given all of the dietary options available from their health care providers.
Until now, many health professionals, including dietitians have generally been advising people with type 2 diabetes to eat in a way that focuses on weight loss through calorie restriction or eating as per the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating.
As the research will support, calorie restrictive diets are rarely sustainable, and the guidelines are generally heavily focused on a higher intake of carbohydrates. While it can be helpful for some, itās not necessarily dealing with the root cause ā being an issue of glucose metabolism, not someoneās weight.
For many people living with any type of diabetes, eating a higher carbohydrate diet often results in difficulty in managing their blood glucose levels. Why? Because out of all the different foods we eat, carbohydrates (whether they are better quality or otherwise) have the greatest impact on blood glucose. Eating less carbohydrates, in whatever way that looks like for someone, will make a big difference in improving blood glucose levels.
This new partnership and endorsement of lower carbohydrate eating means that people will firstly have choice in how they want to approach managing their diabetes through food (a super important factor in self-management of a chronic condition), and importantly for those who want to use this approach, they should now be able to get support to do so much more easily.
Hopefully, it also paves the way for increasing the evidence and improving the national guidelines in the near future to provide support for people living with type 1 diabetes who choose to eat this way too.
Heard the buzz? We're making headlines in The Australian with our new partnership with Diabetes Australia. The Australian health editor Natasha Robinson caught up with Dr Peter Brukner OAM, founder of Defeat Diabetes, and Professor Grant Brinkworth, Director of Research at Diabetes Australia, to discuss our exciting new partnership and pose the question: With the majority of Australians now classified as metabolically unhealthy, is it time to endorse low carb for all?

Did you know that this week is Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness Week?
Eating Disorders now impact over 1 million Australians and have one of the highest mortality rates of any mental illness. They are serious, complex and life-threatening.
Thereās a common misconception that eating disorders have a specific ālookā. The stark reality is that anyone irrespective of age, gender, sexuality, cultural background, or size can experience an eating disorder.
As a Credentialled Eating Disorder Clinician, I can help people with body image concerns and their relationship with food and eating. Find out more at www.eatlivewell.com.au

Very interesting!!!! Hopefully this is something we can follow the Americans.
News! Congress has recognized that the US Dietary Guidelines do NOT serve Americans with obesity, diabetes or other chronic diseases. For people with these conditions, the US Guidelines are not for you.
