This is a very informative article concerning essential oils and coronaviruses. A few highlights are:

1) Essential oils known to exhibit antiviral properties act by creating an environment that viruses don’t like much...but they don’t kill the virus once it has infected the cells and started to replicate.

2) Essential oils known for having viricidal properties act by destroying the virus itself. So basically for this to happen you need to be infected first.

3) There is virtually no research in human subjects testing how essential oils inhibit or potentially assist with coronavirus infection. Almost all studies are on animal cells and in a laboratory setting (not in an actual total living animal). So results really don’t have the depth required to draw any solid conclusions.

4) While there are some oils that display antiviral and or viricidal properties most only work on selected viruses.

5) There is the tricky issue of application. With so many different ways to use essential oils there just is not the research which can tell us with any certainty what is the best, safest way to use oil to protect oneself from viruses (let alone from coronavirus).

6) The most important message we took from the article is that essential oils can be used to improve wellbeing and in improving wellbeing there is generally a positive impact on the immune system. You should not rely on using essential oils to protect you from coronavirus and nor should you rely on them for treatment. Oils can offer relief and psychological benefits and are best used in combination with medical advice / treatment in a scenario where you may have come into contact with any virus.
