This is the corner of a wooden house, not a piece of furniture. The workmanship is amazing. And it was all done with hand tools. There are several examples of how it is done in the comments.

Tucked away in the Tea tree of Venus Bay is the first new home I built with my Dad when I was apprenticed to him many years ago. It is now their home and a spot that we love to visit. This home is built with solar passive design with all major rooms facing due north, the angle of the eaves allow the winter sun to flood light and warmth into its rooms while blocking the harsh summer sun.

Small things can make a big difference. Like attention to lighting in design. These light create soft lighting to this bathroom, and being LED are a good choice for the environment: LED is different to halogen or incandescent lights as they are far more efficient in the conversion of energy usage.

Employee Profile // Renee Naburgs and Haylee Hazelwood

Our team is growing right before our very eyes and we have some very important people who are working hard behind the scenes. Haylee along with Renee are the backbone of our office and continue to upgrade our systems internally with the aim to streamline the company for the ease of contractors, clients and us at HH! They are the reason we are able to continue to do the work that we love whilst maintaining a high level of communication and scheduling for clients. We asked the girls some questions about their role at HH.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Renee and I (Haylee) work at the Sorrento HUB Coworkspace & Eventspace, we love being a part of the community here. Renee spends her time updating and tracking job costs in our Buildertrend software, ordering fixtures and finishes from designer specs, paying suppliers, and has the important job and making sure the team is paid on time! Plus so many other various tasks James throws her way on any given day. My days are a little different. I focus on improving systems and processes, I am happiest trialling new tech to improve our efficiency and communication between office, onsite team, clients and designers + working with James on our social and environmental impact plan.

What has been the most fulfilling part of your role? Introducing a new system or process that saves the team time, improves communication across the board, and positively impacts the client/designer experience.

HH recently updated its software, how much has it changed the processes of HH behind the scenes? Completely. We have recently implemented two new systems – Buildertrend is a project management software that has improved so many areas of our business - communication, job tracking, variation process. The clients also have a login to a client portal to see photos our team is uploading on-site, a summary of invoices paid and what is outstanding + access to our live schedule – so they feel a part of the process which is important to HH. The second system we have recently implemented is ActiveCampaign. This manages our new sales process so our team can see which stage each project is at in the pipeline, to ensure prospective projects continue to flow.

What advice would you give someone pursuing a career in your field? Invest in good systems and processes and never stop looking for ways to streamline, automate and most of all improve the client experience. If a process breaks down, there is no blaming at HH, the only reflection of the process and what we can change together to make it better for next time.

What is your favourite thing about working at HH? We love our office at the Sorrento HUB Coworkspace & Eventspace – walking in here you immediately feel at ease, happy and ready for the day! We also have a wonderful team of like-minded people, who make our jobs easy, and continuously provide us with entertainment 😊

We were recently employed to replace weatherboards at a newly purchased property by our clients in Sorrento. They had a building report by an external group prior to purchasing the property which unfortunately missed that the majority of the north-facing wall had been eaten by termites. The most affected part was the lower wall which was supporting the upper storey. We were able to price rectification work on the day and give the house the temporary support it needed to be safe. The photos attached in the link provided show how important a pre-purchase inspection is by a reputable company and trade people.

Northcote renovation project definitely has some great history. The house, and this lath and its plaster were over 100 years old. Back then it was the wall construction of choice. We are giving it a makeover with the thin strips of wood coming off to be re straightened and plastered to last another 100 years!!!
