Thank you Wyndham City Council for helping our community celebrate new year festival. Entire Burmese diaspora community has refrained from celebrating any major events for past 3 years as Myanmar continues to be in chaotic turmoil following the failed military coup in 2021.

This has further compounded the challenges faced by the community.

The New Year Water Festival takes on additional significance for our community in Victoria. It offers an opportunity for people to come together, reconnect with a cherished tradition, and share their heritage with the next generation. It's a chance for everyone to momentarily set aside their concerns and enjoy themselves. 😊

International Mother Language Day

Different languages from all over the world come together to make up the rich tapestry of human communication! Today, we're celebrating International Mother Language Day, a time to appreciate the many voices and cultural traditions found in our diverse communities. With over 290 languages spoken in Victoria, let's cherish the unique stories each language tells, embrace the variety of languages we have, and work to understand and connect with one another better.

Happy Karen New Year 2763.

05/01/2024

We are still working with Department of education Victoria on the new curriculum which needs additional fine tuning.
As a result, the VSL Burmese language program will be able to start at term 3 instead of term 1.
VSL will also contact parents who have registered their children.

Once curriculum is approved, VSL will resume the registration process and start the classes soonest we can. Estimated time of starting classes would be term 3 which is middle of 2024.

You can still submit your expression of interest in the meantime.

Since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, which claimed thousands of lives and caused many people Internally Displaced, the tragic situation has forced more people from Myanmar to seek refuge in Australia. Our entire community has been under huge stress due to ongoing conflicts back home, which prevent the majority of us from celebrating and enjoying the events for more than 1000 days since then.
We had around 500 people attending this event, and some event goers expressed that they felt at peace for a brief moment, for the first time in 2 years as the environment made them feel at home. Kids are loving to learn their heritage as well.
