Life's been doing it's best to get in the way of me finishing this pair for a customer in Singapore but I've finally gotten there. Really happy with the finished result.
1084/Nickel/304 Stainless San Mai with a copper bolster and Blackheart Sassafras hidden tang handle.
Petty, 290 overall, 168mm blade.
Carver, 420mm overall, 265mm blade.
Test etch and fit up for this big m**o San Mai carver. It's a big knife coming in at a 265mm blade and 420 overall. It'll be great for it's intended use of carving large briskets.
We're expanding our range. Now offering double sided paddle strops, a must for getting your knives to a razor sharp finish. This batch is made from camphor laurel and bovine leather and will be up on the website soon.
Pair of Steak knives. 26C3 carbon steel with purple dyed spalted tamarind scales, toxic green and black g10 liners with mosaic pins. Jo's favourite colour is purple so it looks like we're keeping these ones... ๐.
A bit of a wet day on the Goldy so gives me a chance to get into the workshop. This Japanese Petty is part of a two knife order heading to Singapore. The second knife is identical but much bigger and I'm still working on that. 1084 San Mai steel from Oblivion blades with a hammered copper bolster and Blackheart Sassafras handle.
Thanks all who entered and congrats to Mikey Gray on the win.
Draw closes next Friday. If you want to get in do it now. ๐
Ahh, handsanding. I don't love the process but I do love the end result. It's monotonous and time consuming but it also serves to remind me that sometimes we have to do things we don't enjoy to get desired results.
Sneaky test etch on this San Mai Japanese Petty. ๐๐ช
What knife related activities are you up to this weekend? Cooking a brisket? preparing food? Dressing out a moose or a bunny in the field? Filleting fish? Share a photo in the comments of your knife in action.
I got an early start doing a batch of heat treating this morning. Some has gone well, some not so well. Here I'm thermal cycling some 1084 San Mai. I love seeing the patterns as the heat leaves the steel. Have a great weekend ๐

Custom handmade knives from a local artisan can be considerably more expensive than their mass produced counterparts, so why you ask would you or should you purchase one?
Should you? The short answer is yes, but you are probably wanting a little more clarity as to why you would. So here are a handful of reasons that might help to sway you if you are thinking about investing in a custom handmade knife.
The Art of the Blade: Why You Should Choose a Custom In a world dominated by mass production, where convenience often overshadows quality, the allure of custom handmade knives crafted by local artisans stands out. While mass-produced knives may seem convenient and affordable.

Back home from holidays and back in the workshop. There's a few projects on the go...
I'm currently in New Zealand visiting friends and family and decided to bring some sharpening gear with me. I made this kitchen knife out of 1084 for my mother a little over a year ago and it was really neat to see how the patina has developed over that time. Mum loves this knife and uses it everyday. The sharpness has only dulled slightly and really only needed a little tickle up to get it back to a razor edge again. It's important for me as a knifemaker to see how my knives are performing and the feedback I get is invaluable.
I have a HUGE but small favour to ask whoever is willing to
