It’s been a busy couple of weeks visiting some amazing centres to read Our Unique Selves to the big preschoolers!

Throughout the story the kids learn about a special device the character uses to help her hear her Teacher in class as she has hearing impairment. During one of the readings I met a young boy who was wearing the same device! His friends thought it was super cool that he was wearing the same device as the character in the book! We were able to share with the group how the device works and the young boy was able to hear the story clearly by using the device. It was a great way to educate the children on how we are all wonderfully unique. With a little help we can achieve great things. 📖 ⭐️

I loved sharing this story with the amazing educators and children at Little Beginnings Warners Bay this morning.

The reason I wrote this book was to help other children and parents who have been on a similar journey as my daughter and I. To help build their confidence, realise they are not alone, and to open up conversation about how we can help each-other overcome challenges.

Today's group shared with me that they have friends who are working on their speech just like my daughter. Another friend of theirs wears a hearing device at school just like the one we talked about in the story, and just like Charlie in the book they have a buddy who wears braces on his legs to help support him when he walks. It was so lovely to see the children connect with the story, share their own strengths, and realise that by working together they can achieve their goals.

A very focused, chatty group of superstars who openly talked about the things they are good at and the things they want to work on. 🏃‍♂️ ✍️ 🤸‍♀️

🤝 Community connections 🤝 Today we had a special visit from @belindakiddauthor who provided a thoughtful and engaging group experience for our Inventors and Creators children. Belinda is a local author who has written the story “Our Unique Selves”, inspired by her daughters journey of overcoming challenges and obstacles. Through open discussions, Belinda encouraged our children to identify what they are good at, what they find challenging and what goals they would like to set. We are incredibly thankful for this beautiful experience 💛 @belindakiddauthor #ouruniqueselves

I wanted to be on time, but one of my children ended up on the floor in a fit because they demanded a cookie for breakfast, and I wouldn’t give in.⁣

I wanted to be on time, but one of my children needed to “go poopy” on the way out. And then, after I changed a dirty diaper, my older kids started fighting over who gets to sit in which seat.⁣

I wanted to be on time, but I got to school and realized I had left their backpacks at home and had to turn around. And then, running into the house to get them, my child got a skinned knee and needed it cleaned and bandaged.⁣

I wanted to be on time, but the baby woke up twice in the middle of the night, and I overslept my alarm. Then the toddler thought it was funny to hide and couldn’t be found for over ten minutes. ⁣

I wanted to be on time, but one of my children refused to change out of pajamas while the other couldn’t find their shoes, and then they “didn’t feel quite right” on.⁣

The truth is,⁣
I want to be on time,⁣
and I feel guilty about it.⁣

But kids are messy,⁣
unpredictable,⁣
and will make you late every time.⁣
⁣
So, I’m sorry I’m late,⁣
but I’m a mom. ⁣

Beautiful morning spent reading to the children who attend Maitland Kids Preschool and Early Learning Centre.

A lovely centre and fun group of kids. We had a great chat about the things they wish to practice to get ready for big school!

What a great way to end a Friday afternoon!

Great energy from this group of Kindy kids! I even got several demonstrations of the things they are good at!! Kids were so keen to show me their hopping, running and dancing moves!

After our group discussion the children then sat down and drew the things they wish to work on. Thank you for having me Kinder Green! A special mention to my big guy Luca for being my assistant as well! 💚

Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting Belmont Christian College and sharing ‘Our Unique Selves’ with all of the Year 3 students. This was an extra special visit as this is my daughters class so sharing her story with her peers was really beautiful.

Telling one child’s story of how they’ve overcome challenges opened up wonderful conversations amongst the group and gave other children confidence to share their own story. Those who were once too scared to talk about their own challenges shared for the first time the things they find difficult. One child mentioning that their goal is to be more focused, and to help achieve that they have an Occupational Therapist who helps them. They once may have felt different, judged or simply nervous to share that with others, but after reading ‘Our Unique Selves’ and hearing about the positive impact an Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapist has had on the character reaching their goals they then had the confidence to speak up and tell their peers more about themselves and what they are working on.

All the children shared something they are good at and WOW what an amazing group of musicians, sports players and mathematicians there are in Year 3! They now also understand how they can help each other a little more.

The children all walked away happy, confident and supportive of each-other…. oh and with a cookie in hand to top it off! 🍪

🌟 W O W !! 🌟

I have had the best morning visiting Holy Cross Primary School this morning.

I was so lucky to share Our Unique Selves with all students, from Kinder to Year 6, and I had the pleasure of hearing all students share a little about themselves which was fantastic!

The students openly talked about the things they are passionate about, the things they are really good at, and the things they would like to practice more.

Some students were kind enough to share their own personal journey as well. I was blown away to hear how a young boy started Kindergarten in a wheelchair, barely able to walk, and today as a Year 4 student he now never stops running around the playground! Other children shared that they, like the character in the book, have regular Speech Therapy sessions to work on their speech and language skills.

Many students were also so eager to learn about how to write a book! We talked through the entire process, from putting the words down on paper, proof reading and editing, and how to design the layout and illustrations.

I met a wonderful group of children at Maryland Care & Early Education Centre today.

Both a wonderful read for your young child or student. 📖

With this rainy weather it was a perfect morning to be at Belmont Library for a reading of Our Unique Selves.

Thank you to the beautiful families who came along and shared their own personal stories. It was touching to hear from other parents that they have been on a similar journey with their child and that the story really resonated with them.

The children got involved in a fun activity after the reading, drawing pictures of all the things they wish to achieve. So many little gymnasts in today’s group!

My kids were also thrilled to be asked to sign a book! ✍️

Thank you Lake Macquarie City Council for inviting me and Belmont Library for hosting this morning’s event.

What a wonderful morning it was visiting Discover My World yesterday. The staff and children gave me a very warm welcome and were so engaged in the readings. A fun, energetic group of kids who were so keen to share their strengths, as well as the things they wish to conquer one day!
