KONA GAME FISHING CLUB TAIYO WINS 61st HAWAIIAN INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH TOURNAMENT
At precisely 4pm today, across the radio waves, stop fishing, stop fishing stop fishing rang out and with that, Japan’s Kona Game Fishing Club Taiyo captured the 2023 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament win and coveted Governor’s Trophy.
Although they added no points today and after holding the top spot on the scoreboard all week, this experienced team captured the win with 1300 points. Congratulations to team Captain and angler Masaharu Matsush*ta and fellow angler DaikukeYamazaki.
Year of the Woman Angler
This year, women made up 25% of team anglers, the highest percentage of female anglers in the event’s history. So how did they do?
USA’s Mission Bay Marlin Club angler Heidi McBride tagged two Pacific blue marlin. Australia’s Tag & Brag angler Leanne Kalpus tagged a Pacific blue marlin. Australia’s Dun Deal angler Hannah Dunlea tagged two Pacific blue marlins and New Zealand’s Bay of Islands Swordfish Club angler Brooke Pullan tagged a Pacific blue marlin. HIBT salutes all the women participants! Let’s do it again in 2024.
Second place on the final 2023 HIBT leaderboard went to Japan’s Ohana Fishing Club with 1200 points followed by USA’s Mission Bay Marlin Club with 900 points.
With the return of Kona’s iconic tournament, this year’s scoreboard was active. Fishing aboard Kona’s star-studded fleet, 12 of 13 teams from around the world put points on the leaderboard during the 61st running of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

It's the start of Day 5 already and another cracker of a day here in Kona! Today the team are aboard BEAST MODE and hoping for a grander (1000lb marlin) to boost us up the leader board. Sitting in 4th at the start of the last day of fishing the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament after a slow day yesterday. Go get em team!

Day 3 on the amazing boat BWANA. Skipper Teddy and crew Bobby amd Logan were brilliant. Anthony unfortunately had a ripper spit the lure early in the day. Stretch was next up, half an hour before stop fishing and tagged a beautiful blue marlin. Team Dun Deal are now 3rd on the leader board with 2 days left to go!

Its official we are going to Hawaii!!
Kailua Pier, here we come! HIBT returns with 2 summer tournaments. 61st HIBT set for August 5 through 13, 2023 with five days of fishing set for Monday August 7 through Friday, August 11. New Four Flag Tournament set for Wednesday, August 2 through Friday, August 4 2023. The new HIBT Four Flag Tournament is a light tackle, 30 lb test line, fishing tournament focusing on four species of marlin, ahi, mahi mahi and ono. www.hibtfishing.com
Hey Fisher People,
Sadly we wont be going to Hawaii this Thursday as due to Covid-19 they wont let us out of the country as apparently Billfishing is "Not Essential" (some might disagree 🤷♀️).
I am looking forward to competing in 2021 and have put all funds raised so far into a savings account. Thanks for your support and stay safe.

Why I’m Fundraising
My name is Hannah Dunlea and I am 15 from Cairns. I am currently the Australian International Billfish Junior Angler and my dad and I have won the opportunity to go fishing in the 2020 Hawaiian International Billfish tournament, an invite only tournament.
The 2019 Australian International Billfish Tournament was a 3 day competition with swells of about 2m and winds of 24+ knots and a LOT of rain. Despite the tricky conditions I had an absolute ball and caught 2 Black Marlin, a very big achievement for my dad and I as it is quite a difficult task to do in a 6.5m boat!
I am very passionate about the ocean and I aspire to work in the marine industry when I graduate from school. I currently am working 3 jobs to assist with some of the costs, as well as being a full time student. Fishing has been a passion of mine ever since I could remember, and I love the thrill and excitement of pulling up a new type of fish I've never seen before.
Game fishing is mostly a male dominated sport and that is something I would like to see changed as I become more and more involved in game fishing. In lots of competitions I have entered I have either been the only female or the only junior in the competition. Although fishing is mostly seen as a cruel act on marine life, Billfishing in Cairns has adopted the method of tagging and releasing billfish and other game fish to keep fish in the water and reproducing as well as helping scientific research on billfish.
As the Competition is in Hawaii next year in August, any assistance you could provide would go towards boat charter fees, competition fees, flights and accommodation. It would mean the world for me to represent my state and country in a once in a lifetime experience :)
