How many times have you read a purpose or mission statement that was amazing and inspiring, yet your experience of that business (or person) didnโt match up?
I have often asked leadership teams if they feel that the business aligns with the mission, or how well the stated company values meet the expectation of working there. Sometimes I get confident replies, often it evokes an embarrassed silence.
More than 20 years ago I had the same experience in my own business. We were successful, profitable and had a strong reputation for care and quality. Yet we didnโt meet my ideal of what I thought that business should deliver. We werenโt meeting the purpose that was in my mind for the business I wanted.
So while I was nervous about altering a successful model, I wanted something better for myself, and ultimately my clients. It took a new level of commitment from both my team and myself, but we made the change. The sense of fulfillment I got from my work felt amazing. The 20% uplift in the business was a bonus, my satisfaction with the work we were doing was worth more to me in the end.
