Every year in Australia, more than 48,000 babies required the specialised care of the NICU or Special Care Nursery and sadly, up to 1,000 babies in Australia each year will lose their life.

Natalis and Miracle Babies spoke with Kiara to find out more about her two daughters, Amelia and Georgia'’s story, and we heard about the moments missed and cherished during their journey, plus some great advice for other parents.
The hardest moments that you missed out on
"NICU life does well at making you feel incredibly isolated and like you're the only one going through it. We missed out on maternity photos and our baby shower twice. We barely felt their kicks from the outside before they needed to be delivered in an attempt to save both of our lives. Unfortunately with our second baby, my husband didn't even get the opportunity to cut her cord. I didn't get to see our first daughter for 9 hours and our second for 15 hours. Another really hard milestone we missed out on while our first daughter was in hospital was her first Christmas."
The moments that you cherished most about your journey
"One of the things we cherished most during our time in the NICU was kangaroo cuddles. It took us 26 excruciating days and an army of nurses to hold Amelia and have skin to skin but once I finally did I never wanted to let her go again. Everything else just disappeared, the monitors wouldn't beep as often because they were more settled on our chest, a nurse would walk past and give me a reassuring smile as if to say "good work mum, you deserve this."
Advice for other parents
"My piece of advice for other parents, from a mum who's been there not only once, but twice, is to be kind to yourself. Mama, it is not your fault. It took a very long time but now I realise there was absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent their early arrival. Don’t be too hard on yourself or beat yourself up over it. Acknowledge your feelings and take care of yourself. It is okay to grieve what you thought you were going to have. Nothing about this new life is normal. Reach out if you need support. You're doing the best you can, but remember; you need to be your best for your baby. "

Natalis and Miracle Babies spoke with Karrie to find out more about her three children's stories, and we heard about the moments missed and cherished during their journey, plus some great advice for other parents.
The hardest moment you missed out on:
"For me, the hardest moment I felt I missed out on was having baby in the room postpartum and all going home together. Sitting in the ward after a premature delivery listening to all the other babies with their mums is heart wrenching. Then when the day comes that you’re discharged, seeing the other families all go together and you leave without your baby. You feel so empty in that moment. However when the time comes you take them home there is no better feeling!!!"
The moments you cherished the most about your journey:
"The friendships and basically extended family members you make along the way, whether that’s with other parents and then you get to watch their kids grow for years after, staff members who you love just as much as your own family, they really become your extension for the NICU journey."
"The advice I have for anyone on the NICU journey is to take every day as it comes. I found it so overwhelming but going day by day really helped me. Don’t feel silly for celebrating the small wins!! And take the time for yourself. Self-care is so very important! Do not feel guilty".

Around 1 in 6 babies are born requiring specialised care due to prematurity or sickness at birth.
When this happens, families can miss out on many special moments expected during pregnancy and immediately after birth, sadly even including a simple congratulations.
At the same time though, the NICU is like a world many don’t know exist, and NICU parents come to know of and cherish moments only ever understood by those who have been through it.
As we near World Prematurity Day, Natalis and Miracle Babies are starting the conversation, and to help raise much needed awareness around the challenges (and unique celebrations) of those with a baby born premature or critically ill.
