Cape Byron Power

Cape Byron Power

Cape Byron Power, operated by Cape Byron Management, consists of two 30 MW biomass fired power stations, on the NSW north coast.

Together, these form one of the largest renewable base load generators in Australia.

Cape Byron Power wishes to inform you about the ongoing power outages affecting our region.

Cape Byron Power is an electricity generator and not a network operator or maintainer. Testing to date indicates the recurring early morning power outages and power instability are the likely result of an equipment fault on the electricity distribution network impacting the greater Broadwater, Evans Head, Woodburn and Coraki communities.

Essential Energy is aware of the issue and actively working to resolve it.

We are providing Essential Energy with any assistance required to rectify the issue as soon as possible and as such the Power Plant and the Sugar Mill (Sunshine Sugar) are currently operating disconnected from the network. In the meantime, please direct any outage enquiries to Essential Energy on 13 20 80 or essentialenergy.com.au/contact-us. Power outage updates are available at essentialenergy.com.au/outages or Essential Energy’s page.

Though these outages are impacting the Broadwater Sugar Mill and the Cape Byron Power, both will continue to operate as the Cape Byron Power boiler and generator continues to supply power to the Sugar Mill and the site regardless of being tripped off or disconnected from the Essential Energy network.

Thank you for your understanding and patience as we navigate this challenge together, and for taking the time to read this message.

Our thoughts are with all those throughout the Northern Rivers and right along the coast who have been impacted by this disaster in our region. While both our Condong and Broadwater plants have been heavily impacted, we can and will rebuild. More important is the safety and health of our communities at this time. It has been amazing to see first hand the resilience and mate ship on show, and we have no doubt that this will continue over the coming weeks and months as we work to support one another through such a difficult time.

BREAKING NEWS — ’s forests are being burnt to supply fake renewable ‘decarbonised’ electricity to the national grid. A portable woodchip mill has been installed at , where trees are being clearfelled, chipped/mulched on-site and transported in massive B-doubles to Broadwater Power Station on the Richmond River near Ballina. The Broadwater complex includes a sugar mill and a biofuel power station which burns cane waste and wood, and is owned by Cape Byron Power and managed by Quinbrook, a private equity firm that serves foreign investors.
These photos document the trees’ journey yesterday from Tarkeeth to the power station.

We've recently received questions from the community about our fuel sources and the environmental sustainability of our operations. We want to reassure local residents that we have not, and will not, ever source any of our biomass materials from state forests or private native forests.

Not only do we always endeavour to source the majority of our fuel loads from wastage supplied by local cane growers, but we are always looking at ways to further reduce and reuse wastage in our local area through our operations.

While the vast majority of fuel for our generators come from the plant fibre left over from the sugar cane harvest each year, a portion is also comprised of waste timber from sawmill offcuts or from local w**d removal that has no other economically beneficial use.

We made a commitment to never source any fuel directly from state forests or private native forest. As a result of this commitment, not a single tree from a native forest has been removed as a result of Cape Byron Power’s operations.

ABC Rural

Great to see the support for our industry and the mutually beneficial relationships we build with local agricultural businesses.

Bioenergy is a key linchpin powering our nation's transition to 100% renewables, and we are proud of the role we play in ensuring we achieve this goal.

WHAT BIOENERGY PROJECTS LOOK LIKE
Farmers could play a vital role in an emerging bioenergy industry and help reduce emissions. A Hunter Coal mine is raising money to go green, while Byron Shire is planning to use food waste to fuel their sewage plant and produce fertilizer. Trees could be a major renewable fuel source.
