Our Story
Paint Marrickville REaD is a whole of community approach to read, talk, sing and draw with children from birth so that they will be ready for reading and writing by the time they start school.
Paint Inner West REaD grew from Paint Marrickville REaD which has been active from 2016 creating awareness and opportunities for the whole community to get involved with the promotion of early literacy. We have a pelican mascot called Garranga Bumarri that begun as a tiny egg found by our Cooks River. Children in the area read to the egg over many months at various services across Marrickville South. The egg, like children, benefited from the reading and soon grew into a very large egg that was delivered to a hatching celebration last year. MP Linda Burney named our mascot Garranga Bumarri which means βpelicanβ in the areaβs First Language during the naming ceremony.
Garranga Bumarri continues to love reading and enjoys attending local events and services to encourage and support reading, singing, and talking.
The Paint Inner West REaD initiative is part of Paint the Town REaD that has chapters across Australia. Our local chapter focuses on the local needs and activities that support reading throughout the community.
